RIYADH: Based on a recent study, spinsterhood in Saudi Arabia has escalated at an alarming rate where the number of unmarried girls reached 4 million this year compared to around 1.5 million in 2010.

Experts and social workers attribute this figure to the high rates of dowry and other marriage-related spending.
A new proposal was recently made by Makkah Gov. Prince Khaled Al-Faisal where a dowry was fixed at SR50,000 for unmarried women and SR30,000 for those divorced.

Can you imagine how few women in the US would wed if they had to have dowries?
Women there don't have their own incomes, jobs, businesses to fall back on. Leaving a spouse but them back under the thumb of other male relative. Women don't have freedom or Independence. They don't have a right over their own body. For them the dowry is a reflection of their value, and protection if they are divorced. It used to be that women wore their wealth by how many gold bangles they wore.
Women do not get their husband's wealth after death, it goes to the children and a fraction to the wife, and they are till dependent on some family male.

We still display similar behavior by having outlandish lavish weddings. It is a display of importance and wealth. We have also implemented premarital agreements to protect wealth each comes into the marriage with.
