You don't need assault weapons to protect yourself. You might need one if you were planning a mass shooting though.

I think it is also important to prevent the attacker from entering your home. Have an alarm system, keep doors locked, windows closed and locked at night etc.
You only need to use that weapon when the intruder enters your house, if he/she is outside and you are inside, you are not in danger.

What's truly FUNNY, as in it made me laugh out loud, is that the news report I just heard of this burglar had tried to rob another house a few streets away and was chased off by an armed homeowner.
Maybe this time he learned his lesson.
