The latest news came Wednesday when it was reported that an FBI agent and an investigator from the West Virginia Secretary of State’s office were threatened on Tuesday by 61-year-old Jerry Metheny of Midkiff while they were questioning him as part of their investigation.

Metheny reportedly didn’t like what one of the investigators said, pulled a handgun on the duo and threatened to kill one of them. He has been arrested and charged with assaulting a federal officer with a deadly weapon.

Someone needs to nominate Metheny for a Nobel Peace Prize.

It takes some gall to brandish a firearm in the presence of investigators, let alone an FBI agent. Unfortunately, it speaks to the way far too many in Lincoln County have been thinking and acting.

Let’s digress. The current sheriff and county clerk have agreed to plead guilty to stuffing the ballot box during the 2010 Democratic primary with fraudulent absentee ballots. A few years before that others were found guilty of election tampering.

Lincoln County sheriff, county clerk rigged vote, feds say  - News - The Charleston Gazette - West Virginia News and Sports -

CHARLESTON, W.Va. --Lincoln County Sheriff Jerry Bowman and County Clerk Donald Whitten rigged the county's 2010 Democratic primary election by illegally manipulating absentee votes, federal prosecutors said Monday.

Bowman and Whitten have agreed to plead guilty to federal charges. Both also will resign their posts, according to documents filed in federal court.

"Essentially, the co-conspirators stuffed the ballot box with these illegally obtained absentee ballots," said U.S. Attorney Booth Goodwin. "They used and abused the absentee ballot process for their own gain."

Bowman admitted that he filled out more than 100 absentee ballot applications, hand-delivered them to Lincoln voters, and told them which candidates he backed, according to his plea agreement. At least six times, Bowman also marked voters' absentee ballots in their homes.

Whitten admitted he took part in the absentee voting scheme, and initially lied about his role to an investigator with the Secretary of State's Office.

The U.S. Attorney's Office also is targeting a third unidentified person --believed to be Lincoln County Commissioner Thomas Ramey Jr. -- in the ongoing voter fraud investigation.

Ramey was not charged Monday, but court documents repeatedly mention a "known person" who ran for county commission in the 2010 Democratic primary and joined Bowman and Whitten in the absentee voting scheme.

Ramey, who defeated challenger Phoebe Harless, previously told the Gazette the absentee voting practices weren't illegal. He said he left absentee applications with voters, but didn't tell people how to cast their ballots. He described his tactics as a good campaign strategy.
