First, let me get this out of the way. For all those who think Romney believes education is for snobs, forget it. He spent more time at Harvard than Obama.

Romney supports the Ryan budget which slashes Pell Grants by $170 billion. You can watch Ryan on Youtube say you should get three jobs to pay off student loans. He did. Except when you see his biography, which says Ryan received Social Security which paid for his college, he was a fraternity member and after college, worked at his families company. But this is about Romney.

During his tenure as governor from 2003 to 2007, Massachusetts ranked 47th among states for job creation. Hes running on his ability to turn around the flailing economy and boost employment, so this is a statistic that appeals enormously to his opponents.
Did the Romney administration address the high cost of business in any full blown or strategic way? Widmer asks. The short answer is: No, they did not really have any kind of strategy to address our high business costs.
Then he delivered the kicker.
As a matter of fact, Romney added, we created more jobs in Massachusetts than this president has created in the entire country.

Remember, he became gov. right after implementation of the "Bush Tax Cuts" where were going to spur the economy to great heights (as opposed to great depths).
Michael J. Widmer, president of the Massachusetts Taxpayers Foundation, said Romney gets an A for health reform, a B for state budget issues and a C-minus for economic accomplishments.
Widmer said Romneys work on the economy was especially disappointing given that Romney campaigned on a pledge to open corporate doors and to improve the states ability to compete in the long term.
He never followed up in any comprehensive fashion on being the businessman to help bring business to Massachusetts, Widmer said.
Widmer said the states 2006 health care law is one of the most important accomplishments on Beacon Hill during the past 25 years. Widmer credited Romney and his aides with working with the state legislators, U.S. Sen. Edward M. Kennedy and bringing together groups such as hospitals, consumers, employers and insurers.
I love this. It's incredibly forward thinking. It only affects the middle class and poor leaving the wealthy untouched. This is one brilliant man.
Romney did not raise taxes on people, but he did turn to fees for generating state revenues.
During his first year in office, Romney and state legislators raised fees by about $500 million, including doubling the fee for a learners permit to drive, 50 percent increases for state licenses for about 200 professions and some miserly fees including a $10 annual fee on blind people (see? Brilliant!), except for those on federal disability, to prove they are blind in order to receive tax breaks and public housing. Homeowners also were forced to pay 3.5 times more just to file a document to protect their property from legal judgments.
Romney's lieutenant governor was the party's nominee to succeed him but she lost to Patrick in 2006 in a landslide, ending 16 years of Republican rule in the corner office.

Massachusetts was one of just four states that by the time of the financial crisis still had not recovered all the jobs they had lost during the 2001 recession. And, as Romneys opponents have pointed out, the state ranked 47th in job creation during his term.
The parallels between Massachusetts then and the country as a whole now point to the same central problem that has dogged the U.S. economy the last three times its climbed out of a recession: The recovery hasnt created enough jobs.
Many state policymakers and economists say Romney struggled to apply his business expertise to Massachusettss problems during his tenure.
But Andrew Sum, a professor of economics at Northeastern University, says the unemployment rate fell only because people were leaving the workforce in droves during Romneys term. Just one state had a bigger drop in its labor force during the same period, according to Sum that was Louisiana, which was hit by Hurricane Katrina in 2005.

Romney prefers to focus on his past as a corporate executive at Bain Capital, where he often invested in companies and laid off workers while reaping huge profits. But a closer look at Romneys governorship of Massachusetts, from 2003 to 2007, reveals that his experience as a job-creator isnt all that great. In fact, Massachusetts lagged behind the nation in virtually every economic measure, Andrew Sum, an economics professor at Northeastern University, told the Washington Post:
There was not one measure where the state did well under his term in office. We were below average and often near the bottom, said Sum, who is also the director of Northeasterns Center for Labor Market Studies.
While the unemployment rate under Romney did fall, it was largely due to contraction of the labor force a criticism Romney has often leveled at Obama. According to Sum, the only state that saw a sharper drop in its labor force during Romneys tenure was Louisiana, the state that was ravaged by Hurricane Katrina in 2005.

It took a hurricane to give a state a worse record than Romney. Funny, it was Katrina. Another Republican disaster. They could have helped those people, but it goes against the "compassionate conservative" philosophy of "let him die".
