The interstate highway system put a perfectly good transportation system out of business, one that didn't cost the taxpayers a cent. It was called the railroad. The interstate highway system is a net loss to consumers.

I don't much care for this argument. Railroads are socialistic, interstates are democracy. I choose where I want to go on them, the railroad chooses for everyone on board.

Businesses benefit from use of the commons...which are funded by all forms of commerce which is taxed. No business could possibly fund its own use of the commons. It is dependent upon said commons. It is, in return, obligated to the commons.

Businesses are "there" to benefit the owners, the employees, the local community, the county, the state and the nation.
