Why wouldn't Jesus...

Strawman. I never said Jesus said anything about welfare.

I suppose I should have dumbed down my question. I'll try again at another time.

Can someone please explain to me what this CRAP is about money being taken by FORCE?

We live in a Democratic Republic, and our taxes are instituted by the people WE HAVE ELECTED to represent us...to diminish this is an injustice and somewhat of a lie in my opinion, this taken by FORCE garbage.

I don't get to choose individually not to send any of my tax dollars to Iraq, because i find it morally wrong? I chose my representative to represent me, but if the majority of other people he represents think differently than me, I have to live with it...this does not mean i am FORCED, it means sometimes you win and sometimes you lose in a government governed by THE PEOPLE.

So those of my friends on here using this kind of terminology are way OFF BASE in my opinion, and can only hurt the Democratic Republic that we have through this kind of easily said slander...yes slander, again, in my opinion.

This is the question, no one has answered it.

Why wouldn't Jesus... want us to structure our society to help the poor?

Because Jesus never forced any of his followers to follow him.

In contrast, failure to follow the law will result in severe punishment.

That matters not at all. A society that voluntarily sets itself up to help the poor, even if not every member of society gives willingly, would not be something Jesus would be against.
We already have one, if you didn't notice. I suggest you join us.

The United Way
The Salvation Army: Home
Feed The Children: Will you help feed a hungry child?

We call it America.

Unfortunately, the change that Obama brings is not voluntary, but rather violently coercive.

There is your answer, Ravi. Perhaps you missed it?

how can that really be your answer? when our taxes are taken from us and given to FAITH BASED initiatives, via president bush/congress legislative changes under the last administration? was that voluntary? :eusa_whistle:

No you don't. You vote for no one, vote for a write in or you vote for someone the PARTY has selected for you.

want us to structure our society to help the poor?

Jesus preached that we should help the poor...that is indisputable.

I often see self-described Christians arguing against social welfare, claiming that Jesus meant that we should help the poor individually.

This makes no sense to me. If we have the power, as individuals, to collectively help the poor then IMO this is what Jesus would want us to do.

Any thoughts?

Because they have much more important things to think about. For one, getting those babies born is a full time job. Who has time to care for them once they are born? Isn't it enough that they got born? Besides, that's what the mother gets for having sex.

Second, even though gays make up less than 5% of the population and most Christians don't even know any, they are obviously a greater threat than the terrorists.

Those two very important things take up all their time.

Yes, that is a form of violent coercion. Bush had a tendency towards violence. The charities I mentioned are not FAITH-BASED, as I am agnostic.

Does Bush's wrongdoing justify Obama's wrongdoing?

This is the question, no one has answered it.

Why wouldn't Jesus... want us to structure our society to help the poor?

This was answered, numerous times: Yeshua came to give individuals a path to everlasting life. He told us to accept our position in life, work to improve it, and ALWAYS strive towards His glory.

He was not about government, that will be when He comes again. He will use truth as a sword, to overthrow His enemies.

Society is not about the individual, it is about the collective (legion, the term used by the demons possessing a man that Yeshua exorcised). Yeshua and His Father knew that making a group do something was pointless (it needs constant supervision or force to produce), that the individual, alone, is the only way to make society a better place, and that must be done thru personal growth.
"Your plan" (of structuring society to help the poor) has been tried: communism, socialism, and facism have all claimed to "want" to make all society better. The result has been the opposite. If you have evidence where it worked on those ideas (not a mix with capitalism: that needs the individual motivation), please present it.

That matters not at all. A society that voluntarily sets itself up to help the poor, even if not every member of society gives willingly, would not be something Jesus would be against.

In fact, those that didn't give willingly would be no different in his eyes than those that didn't give willingly to some other charitable program or poor individual.

A Society can't Collectively "Volunteer"...

Christ on Cracker, you are NOT very Bright, are you...

You're Livin' so Trife, you Need Jeeeeeeeeeeesus in your Life!

Of course a society can collectively volunteer. Jesus fucking Christ you moron what the hell do you think a society is, anyway?

You must spread some Reputation around before giving it to Ravi again.

IMO, I would say the Jesus would want a structure to assist the poor.

"And Jesus answering said unto them, Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's. And they marvelled at him." In modern words pay the taxes that are due.

Equality and justice is written throughout the Bible. The entire Bible is the Word that is written concerning Jesus. Not all teach from the entire Bible.

Portion of Deuteronomy - Chapter 15

Save when there shall be no poor among you; for the LORD shall greatly bless thee in the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee [for] an inheritance to possess it:

If there be among you a poor man of one of thy brethren within any of thy gates in thy land which the LORD thy God giveth thee, thou shalt not harden thine heart, nor shut thine hand from thy poor brother:

But thou shalt open thine hand wide unto him, and shalt surely lend him sufficient for his need, [in that] which he wanteth.

I don't see it that way....

and i see the misuse of the word coercion and a misuse of the word of violence, on your part, being sort of a drama queen....in order to try to make some point?

I don't have one itty bitty reservation about wanting to find a way where health care is easily accessible to EVERYONE...I am not certain or am pretty certain, this gift horse to the insurance companies is not the way to go, but no concerns on an overall program that makes health care costs more affordable for all of us...

it is what Christ asks of all of us...we do not live our lives as Christians only outside of government, we live our lives as Christ taught...EVERY MINUTE OF THE DAY, in ALL aspects of our lives....

for those that say that Christ would not support us supporting a social plan that covered all of our medical well being....they are talking foolishness.

Christ lived in a Theocracy...with a parent dictatorship over that, the Romans....

but all that giving that Christ spoke about was within the Theocracy form of government that they lived in...tithing was to their government...yes their synagogue, or to the religious or to what we call the Church, but the Church WAS THEIR RULING GVT....

Telling the Rich man to GIVE UP EVERYTHING he had, was giving it up to their church, and their church was a theocracy form of GOVERNMENT...so i do not think that he had anything against the gvt helping people....and it is a falsity to say otherwise, imho.

No, it wasn't answered.

What led me to ask the question are two things. Somewhere else on the board a Christian claimed that Jesus would be against social welfare. It was also claimed the other day that Jesus's teachings could only be applied to individuals and not states.

My question is simple. Why would Jesus be against a society deciding to help the poor. I cannot think of one single reason and so far no one has come up with one.
