Why We Need More, Not Less, Government

"Increased government efforts could do much more to improve our lives in significant ways."In the face of increasing threats to our wellbeing and the inability of the market or individual efforts to effectively address them, we need to expand public sector programs.

For decades, conservatives have been pushing for smaller government, and have consistently called for reduced social spending, less regulation, and more tax cuts. But not everyone agrees. When the financial crisis hit in the fall of 2008 and the economy began to melt down, suddenly there were calls for bigger and more active government. Many people wanted a massive federal stimulus plan to ward off an economic depression, and others demanded the widespread re-regulation of financial markets to prevent a recurrence of these problems.
Government is Good - Why We Need More, Not Less, Government

Needless spending on preventing border crossings should be slashed.

Your post is ignorant and buffoonish beyond belief. :D It was precisely GOVERNMENT which caused the 2008 financial crisis, the ultimate result of the Community Reinvestment Act and the artificially low interest rates created by the Fed. Demanding more government in light of what's happened is like administering more poison to a patient who has been poisoned and nearly died from it.

The CRA didn't really play a big part in the housing bubble. Artificially low interest rates, on the other hand, played a big part, and was something that was supported completely by GW along with many others. There is enough blame to go around.

Every single effort, even the tiniest effort, of ANY action by the government is ONLY possible because the government has men with guns to enforce it's will.

Your local gov't recreational basketball and soccer leages? Funded by the gov't. With money the gov't takes from people. Taken by coercion, with the threat of violence for those who do not comply.

Bans on "bad" foods and smoking? ONLY work because men with guns can enforce that law if the gov't sees fit.

Our society has a lot of problems. And we need a lot of solutions. But deferring to the MEN WITH GUNS for everything? My God, I never thought it would be the right wing telling the LEFT wing that it's not always good to turn to the men with guns for all the answers.

Republican, Democrat, they both want big governments (at least the Dems are honest about it). Small government is what secures our freedom; it's how they did it then and it's how it should be done now!

btw, ya know you Los Angeles wrong, right?

George Bush didnt set interest rates. The Federal Reserve does that.
But it does not negate the argument that gov't caused this problem, not business. The CRA certainly played a part, although too-low interest rates were a much bigger culprit.
Whatever, the last thing we need is more gov't. Government programs have had the opposite effect of their intent.

So excessive government abusing it's power creates problems, so your plan is to give that government even more power? Are you sure you've thought this through?

Corporate greed is what destroyed our economy.

I will agree that it was greed that destroyed the U.S, but the object to that greed is where we have to part ways.
The greed is on the part of those that figured out they can vote themselves money from the public funds.
welfare
housing
medical
foreign aid
endowment for the arts
catering to the illegals
the list is long, What you perceive to be greed by corporations is most likely only their way of trying to retain some of their corporate profits.
I know, this is the time to bring up the oil companies and the billions in profits they make. But look at the margin they run on to make that profit, there really is not that much room to tax their dollar before that profit is totally gone.

Reduce the federal government to only those duties as described in the constitution when written, and watch how fast the debt can go down.
Naturally, states will have to raise tax or drop foolish spending, but if they do raise taxes, its not that hard to follow the jobs to a more fiscally responsible state.
Maryland is seeing that migration now, worst in the country for job creation, more upper level income earners leaving every day, more demand for government services, less revenue. With the tax and spend policies of the idiots that keep getting voted in to power in Maryland, it will be a very short time before the state resembles a third world country. All you have to do is drive through the state and experience the condition of the roads to see how the leadership failures are taking the toll on daily life.

I now have 7 years till I can retire, too short a time to give up what I have already worked for, but what seems like an eternity before I can leave. If housing prices were better, I would sell and commute in from Virginia just to avoid Maryland tax and idiocy.

I'm becoming convinced that every form of government and every kind of economy ultimately leads us down the road to totalitarian.

While certainly some kinds of government and some kinds of economic systems are far better than others, NONE are capable of preventing those in charge from feathering their own nests at the expense of the society as a whole.

Every government seems to suffer from the basic problem that POWER CORRUPTS

The CRA had absolutely nothing to do with the collapse. Zero. Zilch. And the "artificially low interest rates" were set by the Bush administration in an effort to "Starve the Beast" and give corporations cheap cash they could sit on or buy back stock.

Because "we" are mentally retarded parasites?

Lead the way chief. Get up off your ass and go into the wilderness. Clear some land..farm maybe..hunt. Go on. Try it. No gubmint for a year or so.

If you make it..you can let us all know how it went.

Government brings food to the store and built your home? Really?

They control the water and sewer so they do that right, but so did the Romans.
