Why We Must Raise Taxes on the Rich
Wednesday 6 April 2011
by: Robert Reich, Robert Reich's Blog

It’s tax time. It’s also a time when right-wing Republicans are setting the agenda for massive spending cuts that will hurt most Americans.

Here’s the truth: The only way America can reduce the long-term budget deficit, maintain vital services, protect Social Security and Medicare, invest more in education and infrastructure, and not raise taxes on the working middle class is by raising taxes on the super rich.

Even if we got rid of corporate welfare subsidies for big oil, big agriculture, and big Pharma – even if we cut back on our bloated defense budget – it wouldn’t be nearly enough.
Read the whole article before disputing what Reich is saying:
Why We Must Raise Taxes on the Rich | Truthout

Anybody who claims that creating a massive federal bureaucratic apparatus (i.e. "single payer" socialized medical services) as a way to save money has zero credibility whatsoever.

His dreck is just another re-re-re-re-rehashing of classic leftist wealth envy, flimsily cowering behind the rubric of fiscal responsibility.

Robert Reich...

He's starting with a flawed premise:

The only way America can reduce the long-term budget deficit, maintain vital services, protect Social Security and Medicare, invest more in education and infrastructure, and not raise taxes on the working middle class is by raising taxes on the super rich.

He has no interest in making social security and medicare more efficient by using free market solutions and we already pay way too much for education. He'll have to define what he means by infrastructure because that could mean anything.

Why? It's working very well in every country where it's in place, e.g., Canada, France, Germany, et.al. The problems here are bureaucracy, fraud and mismanagement, all of which can be controlled with sensible regulation.

His dreck is just another re-re-re-re-rehashing of classic leftist wealth envy, flimsily cowering behind the rubric of fiscal responsibility.
Your country is presently burdened with a crushing national debt. Robert Reich's academically competent advice led to the economic success of the Clinton Administration and now he's telling us how to best deal with our debt problem. But you have somehow worked it out that "envy" of the rich has fostered his reasoning.

You've become a Johnny One-Note with this "envy" theory. Who planted that notion in your mind -- Limbaugh, Beck or Hannity?

Thank you. Now read the whole blog before disputing what Reich is saying.

Don't need to. He starts off with bullshit, why should I waste time reading yet more bullshit?
I'm sure Mr. Reich will be crushed to learn of your criticism.

I'm sure he'll live. But, next time, perhaps you should form your own opinions by studying an issue and applying some critical thought to a variety of sources... instead of making yourself look stupid by accepting the blog of some bullshit artist. Just a suggestion.

No, it's not working....Anyone who claims it is has a serious disconnect from reality...In fact, the Canadians are trying to find a way to allow fee-for-service medicine (which is beginning to go black market) without looking like the fools that they are.

Reich is a political hack, plain and simple...He hasn't a gram of credibility with anyone outside the leftist tool hack establishment and those gullible enough to be taken in by them.

Raising income taxes on the rich is a no-brainer. However, the Corporate rates need to be competitive with the world economy norms.

That said, we need to stop off-shore tax shelters. If the rich move their wealth to Switzerland or Belize they pay no taxes. Did we ever get Marc Rich's back taxes? He moved to Israel and lives well.

We need to manage global wealth to be sure that when the coxuckers move factories overseas that they pay a price, and when they create jobs here in the US they get tax breaks.

Having seen what the so-called "free market" has done to our economy over the past three decades you are still a Milton Friedman acolyte? Interesting.

He'll have to define what he means by infrastructure because that could mean anything.
Not really. At least not according to Webster:

infrastructure (infre strukcer)
n.
a substructure or underlying foundation; esp., the basic installations and facilities on which the continuance and growth of a community, state, etc. depend, as roads, schools, power plants, transportation and communication systems, etc.
infrastructural
adj.

Etymology
[infra- + structure]

Johnny one note..that's funny.

Oddball starts every counter argument by saying "anyone that believes *strawman* is an idiot / loses credibility / can't be taken seriously"

It's perfect for every response.

Right there says it all. The Man does not even understand basic math. Even if we took every single penny the super rich make in a year. It would not even put a dent in the problem. Not to mention those super rich, would just flee the high taxes.

The idea that you can simply tax the super rich and solve our problems is so laughable, it can only be the idea of a Childish, Idealist ass, with a poor grasp of math.

Here's another one that's perfect for every response: Fuck you.

Now, name just one federal program (remember, Reich is claiming that socialized medicine will make it cheaper) that has come in under projected costs....Just one.

In fact, Medicare costs in excess of ten times (counting for inflation) what it was projected to cost, when that abortion of a program was put into effect.

Anyone making the preposterous claim that socialized medicine will be cheaper can be dismissed without reading any further.

It's not an 'article', it's a blog.

I would love to see us adopted the 50% tax ,
everyone pays 50% of their wages to the government ,
and we get free collage , health care , and more . all of our services fire police , cover everything , no matter rich poor or middle class .

Joe Stiglitz is saying pretty much the same thing.

"The top 1 percent have the best houses, the best educations, the best doctors, and the best lifestyles, but there is one thing that money doesn’t seem to have bought: an understanding that their fate is bound up with how the other 99 percent live.

"Throughout history, this is something that the top 1 percent eventually do learn. Too late."
