Clearing Up The Confusion Over Trucker Per Diem And Tax Reform - Per Diem Plus

Do you see that list? That’s a list of things that used to be deductible for truck drivers. But they’re no longer deductible under the Republicans “tax cuts for needy billionaires”.

I was watching a group of truck drivers be interviewed. One of them said that he used to not pay any taxes at all with all the deductions. But this past year he had to pay $8000 in taxes.

Because all of the deductions that they used to be able to get. They were deductions because they were things he was paying while he was working.

Corporations get that now when they apply for tax to ductions based on the age of their equipment.

When asked if they voted for Trump, most raised their hand. When they were ask if they’re going to vote for Trump in the next election, none of them raised their hand.

And there are truck drivers all across the United States. Everywhere. How many are going to vote for the man that raised their taxes by $8000?

Don’t underestimate how stupid Americans can be. We elected Trump, after all. He’ll do his “scary brown people” act again and the mouthbreathers will stop complaining about how he has no idea what he’s doing.

I’m not so sure. In the immortal words of George W. Bush:

Everybody may be paying $8000 more in taxes for the green new deal if a Democrat gets elected.

Just for clarity, you posted the list, but failed to post the statement that introduced the list in the article. What does that statement say?

The following is a non-exhaustive list of expenses company drivers will no longer be allowed to claim as itemized deductions on Schedule A of their income tax returns:
(emphasis added).

So, how many owner/operator truckers versus company truckers in the U.S.? The answer could possibly change your premise of how many would vote Republican again.

Obama must of had a reason....im sure dean would agree....

If truck drivers weren't paying taxes due to a broken tax system, it's a good thing Trump fixed it.

And since when do Democrats complain about closing loopholes?

You were likely watching disinformation fed to you by an anti-USA propaganda outlet.

Every OTR trucker I know is pissed off at the Dems because Obama's war against the American middle class hit them particularly hard.

Because OTR truckers are primarily white males, the racist Obama administration specifically targeted them.

Dear deanrd and Old Man Grumbles
I tried to verify with other sources online:

2018 Per Diem Deductions Changed, Here Are the Details - Trucker Taxes

* This is correct that COMPANY DRIVERS/EMPLOYEES are affected.
* And it estimates the difference it makes is "up to a couple thousand dollars"
-------------------------
Company Drivers, or Employees of Trucking Companies
As previously mentioned. One part of the new tax bill approved in December of 2017 was the elimination of the Miscellaneous Itemized Deduction category. Things that fall in this category include unreimbursed employee expenses (see below), tax preparation fees, investment interest, etc. Note, the "unreimbursed employee expenses" include union dues, job education, certain uniforms, and TRAVEL.

For tax years beginning before 1/1/18, the IRS has allowed DOT transportation workers to take a per diem deduction for the days that they travel for work. Basically this means that drivers were allowed a small amount of tax-free money each day to help offset the increased living expenses incurred because of the nature of being on the road. However, beginning 1/1/18, this category of deduction has been eliminated.

The elimination of this per diem tax exemption can make a huge difference to some taxpayers, up to a couple thousand dollars in taxes.
--------------

* more on how the policy on "per diem" payments and expense write-offs was changed:
Tax Reform and Per Diems for Truck Drivers: CliftonLarsonAllen (CLA)

-------------------------------
Since this change in the law, employers can still offer this pre-tax benefit, but there is a downside for the company. Currently an employer can deduct all the wages paid to the driver, but if they set aside an amount and designate as per diem reimbursement they can only claim 80% of that amount as a deduction for their own taxes.
-------------------------------

How per diems were used prior to the new tax law
Before the passage of tax reform legislation, there were three ways per diems could to be taken:

  1. A common carrier would pay its company drivers a per diem for nights they were away from home. The per diem could be in the form of a flat dollar amount or based on miles driven. That per diem amount was nontaxable to the driver, and the common carrier would get an 80 percent tax deduction for it.
  2. A common carrier would not pay its company drivers per diems. These drivers could claim a per diem (typically $63 per day) as an unreimbursed business expense on Schedule A, which was subject to the 2 percent adjusted gross income limitation.
  3. Independent contractors or owner-operators would claim a per diem (typically $63 per day) as a business expense (presumably on Schedule C).
Per diems can no longer be claimed as an unreimbursed business expense
The new tax law does not affect scenarios #1 and #3 above. Trucking companies can still pay their drivers a nontaxable per diem and take a business deduction for it. And owner-operators can continue to take a per diem to the extent they are away from home.

Scenario #2, however, has been eliminated. To help pay for the law’s tax cuts, Congress did away with a variety of itemized deductions for individuals, one of which is the “2 percent miscellaneous itemized deductions,” where a driver could claim per diems as an unreimbursed business expense. Because this is no longer allowed, by extension scenario #2 has become obsolete.

Hello. No doubt Donald Trump is a rough and tumble NYer, who sadly, engages in silly, juvenile name-calling I find dumb & offensive coming from a potus, as well as most adults.

It appears years of interacting with mouthy, seriously disturbed SUIC!DAL, HOMICI!DAL thinking organized crime figures and killers like Sammy Gravano rubbed off on him.

However, I voted for Donald Trump.

Would you prefer I voted for Mrs. Hillary Clinton, a predatory, pandering politician who once callously characterized as "Super Predators" a significant population of 'Childhood Trauma (#ACEs) victims who THROUGH NO FAULT OF THEIR OWN, experienced America's potentially life scarring SYSTEMIC & GENERATIONAL Culture of Black or African American Child Abuse, Emotional Neglect and Maltreatment that evolved from America's multi-generational, ignorant, once legal Culture of Racism!

I am referring to a Culture of Child Abuse, Emotional Neglect, Abandonment and Maltreatment responsible for popular American urban story-TRUTH-tellers and 'Childhood Trauma' (#ACEs) victims the late Tupac Shakur (born 1971) and Mr. Barack "My Brother's Keeper" Obama White House guest and friend Kendrick Lamar (born 1987) vividly describing in their American art and interviews the "T.H.U.G.L.I.F.E." and "Good Kid, m.A.A.d. City" Child Abuse Cultures prevalent in far too many American communities.

I am referring to a Culture of Systemic and Generational CHILD ABUSE that THROUGH NO FAULT OF THEIR OWN, deprived Tupac and Kendrick, their childhood friends, as well as many of their elementary and JHS classmates from experiencing a SAFE, fairly or wonderfully happy American kid childhood.

Sadly, the traumatic, potentially life-scarring Criminal Child Abuse and Emotional Abandonment each of these men speaks about experiencing during a critical period of human/childhood development, resulted with them maturing into emotionally ill adults revealing in public they’ve been experiencing acute depression as well as Suic*dal Thoughts for most of their lives.

The same Culture of African American Child Abuse, Neglect and Maltreatment that for more than 30 years has been inspiring significant numbers of popular urban story-TRUTH-tellers to compose and promote American music art HATEFULLY informing our world that American girls, women and MOTHERS of African descent should be viewed as less than human *itches, *hores, 'hoes' or "THOTS" unworthy of being treated with basic human respect. (THOT = "That Hoe Over There")

Any discussion of who will, or will not, vote for any candidate is silly at this point.

It's like a chess player listing what moves he will make before the game has even started. He may have a strategy, but the moves he make will depend on what the other fellow does.

At this point, we don't even know who the Democrat candidate will be.

However, hold to a blind belief that your side will emerge victorious without doubt, that strategy worked so well in the last Presidential Election.
