Because it was a "just" war.

Germany attacked the Soviet Union.

Bad as the SU was - Nazi Germany was worse.

Most puntis predicted Russia would fall within months.

Germany violated theRippontrop-Molotov peace treaty -so there fore Rusia had the high moral ground.

Um no that wasn't the reason! If that was the reason then anytime a country invaded anothter country the victory would be the invaded. Tell that to Georgia! Tell that to all the countries the Arab Caliphates invaded, the Middle East used to be a collection of different peoples, Egypt and North Africa used to be made of Black skinned Africans. The Arab Caliphates of the 7th-10th centuries unjustly invaded the entire Middle East and North Africa displacing all the inhabitants and transposing them with Arabs. Almost happened to Europe, if the Franks didn't kick their Arab behinds in. The Arab Egyptian is different than the Egyptian of King Tuts time.

The USSR won because Germany had to take on Britian, US and USSR on a 2-3 front war. Not to mention the USSR had a nice military infrastructure, many factories to produce weapons of war, a vast countryside, large population and ruthless commanders.

The USSR didn't defeat Nazi Germany on their own. No even close. If it was Nazi Germany vs the USSR in a one on one match, the USSR would have been defeated. The only country at the time that could have defeated Nazi Germany one on one was America!

a vast countryside,

Well, no. Remember, the really, really bad part about what the Nazis were doing wasn't generally known until after the war was almost over. In 1941, so far as the world knew, Hitler was a dictator and a military aggressor and conqueror. Well, both of those applied to Stalin, too. He wasn't as recklessly aggressive as Hitler, but when he saw an opportunity he didn't scruple to send in the troops. And he was certainly a dictator who made a habit of ruthlessly destroying his political enemies, just as Hitler did.

Try these factors.

The Soviet Union was much bigger than Germany, with a far larger population, and greater industrial capacity. That meant that, in order to win, the Germans had to win quickly, with the advantage of surprise on their side. Essentially, they had to win in 1941. They didn't. That made it a war of attrition, which they had no chance to win.

Having survived the first German attack in 1941, the Soviets were able to relocate their factories to Siberia, out of range of the Luftwaffe. They had enough soldiers that they could afford to take lopsided casualties. Soviet mistakes cost them armies that could replace; German mistakes, as at Stalingrad, cost them armies that couldn't be replaced. And everyone makes mistakes in war.

The Soviets also came out with a superior tank design, the T-36, better than anything the Germans had (or anyone else for that matter). They received material assistance from the United States. The Germans had to worry about North Africa and Italy, due to American-British invasions, while the Soviets had only one front. All these things contributed, but the main thing that made Soviet victory inevitable was the fact that it was simply a bigger, stronger country, and the Germans failed to score a knockout in the first year of the war. After that, it was only a matter of time.

Well, time and lots of dead bodies.

I doubt it. And given that the Russian front basically holds the record in terms of casualties, it's more the reason why the Allies won.

Don't discount the fact that the Russian people (not the fucking Communist leaders) showed almost unimaginable determination and perseverance. A lot of this was not exactly 'voluntary,' but you can't say the Russians did not show some amazing toughness there.

You are a fucking retard ginscpy.

The Russians won because it was a "just war"? Is that what passes for history these days? The Russian winter beat the German invasion and the dying US president who called Stalin "uncle joe" let the Russians take Berlin and establish the post-war "Iron Curtain".

Yup...they say the Russians three great generals won the war: December January February

I hate to even suggest it, but I often wonder if that Germany army was not the best army the world has ever known? We'll never really know, however, still....

They were top notch. No doubt about it.

They were really good but I am glad they were defeated, the Japanese Military were some tough sons of bitches as well.

Having bended an elbow or 2 with some WWII vets..they would support your opinion, wholeheartly. Even though they would add more to the "son of bitches" thing... :D

The current US army is the answer to that trivia question.

But....you have a great thread a-bornin' there, Reggie....

Once one specifies the time, strategy, national character, weapons....

One hell of a lot of material help from the rest of the world. Huge numbers of aircraft and tanks and food supplies left US Ports and airfields for Russia. And they don't believe in "thank you."

Not so fast...he did give one 'gift'...

Roosevelt flooded Stalin with Lend-Lease aid- food, planes, tools and supplies in large quantities. Stalin, in turn, planted spies in the United States who worked their way into key positions in the American government. They influenced U.S. policy to favor Russia; they sent copies of government documents to Russia; and they described U.S. plans in messages to Russia. Stalin knew about the development of the atomic bomb before President Truman did. Folsom and Folsom, "FDR Goes To War," p. 304.

The only thing that saved the USSR was the Winter of 1941. Any Global Warming type of mild Winter and Moscow falls by Christmas and that would have been the end of it for Stalin & Company.

The T-34 tank was arguably the best overall tank of the war; diesel powered, easy to fix, could match up readily against anything except the Tiger and once loaded with the 85mm gun in Oct 43, even Tigers were fair game.

After the defeat at Stalingrad, Rommel recommended that the German Army focus on producing more AT guns instead of tanks and fighters instead of bombers and try to win a war of attrition in the East

Had Patton not been demoted after slapping the solder and him and Bradley not switched roles, the German Army in the West would have been crushed in the Falaise Pocket and the US Allies would have been in Berlin 6 months ahead of the Russians.
