Why oh why oh why!

Why do people think like sheep sometimes? We had a family function, and we were talking about current events. When the conversation moved to politics, it got nuts. One of the in-laws stated talking about how he hates this or that, but then he says he ACTUALLY SUPPORTS IT because of his party!! INSANE!! I'm kinda new to politics, (a few years of brainwashing under my belt) but the 2 party system seems crazy. Why don't we all just vote on the topics, not follow the party ideas. We have dems blaming everything from the economy to football scores on republicans, and republicans blaming the wars and dog poop on the carpet on the dems.
