Hagel: ISIS 'beyond anything that we've seen,' US must 'get ready'

Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel issued a dire warning Thursday about the threat posed by the Islamic State terrorist group, saying the organization is "beyond anything that we've seen."

Hagel spoke at a press conference in which he addressed the execution of American journalist James Foley, at the hands of terrorists from the group, also known as ISIS or ISIL. The U.S. military continues to launch airstrikes against Islamic State targets in northern Iraq, in support of Iraqi and Kurdish forces, but Hagel suggested more action may be necessary.

"ISIL is as sophisticated and well-funded as any group that we have seen," Hagel said. "They're beyond just a terrorist group. They marry ideology, a sophistication of strategic and tactical military prowess. They are tremendously well-funded. Oh, this is beyond anything that we've seen. So we must prepare for everything."

He said the only way to do that is take a "cold, steely hard look" and "get ready."

The U.S. has restricted its military action to Iraq, but concerns have increased as the Islamic militant group extends its reach from safe havens in Syria across the Iraqi border.

Speaking alongside Hagel at a Pentagon news conference, Army Gen. Martin Dempsey said that although the Islamic State group can be contained it cannot be defeated without attacking it in Syria.

ISIS Is Taking Over Iraq Using Captured American Weapons

ISIS is marching through city after city in Iraq, and they are doing it with American weapons. Thanks to a series of stunning victories in recent months, ISIS has captured a vast array of U.S. military equipment including trucks, Humvees, rockets, artillery pieces and Stinger missiles.

Now we have to reflect on why ISIS has become such a strength. Where did the void materialize for which ISIS quickly filled , like ants on a dropped piece of gum?

Panetta: Obama Wrong on Iraq Pullout, Failure to Arm Syrians

Former Defense Secretary Leon Panetta says his old boss, President Barack Obama, erred when he failed to leave a residual military force in Iraq – and when he didn't opt to arm the Free Syrian Army earlier.

"I really thought that it was important for us to maintain a presence in Iraq," Panetta said in an interview aired Sunday on CBS's "60 Minutes."

Panetta said he and Obama's other advisers thought that at least 8,000 U.S. troops should have stayed in Iraq. "And frankly, having those troops there I think would've given us greater leverage on [Prime Minister Nouri al-]Maliki to try to force him to do the right thing as well."

The Obama administration has insisted that al-Maliki would not make a "status of forces" agreement that U.S. troops would not be prosecuted by Iraq's government. Republican critics claim the real reason is that Obama wanted to fulfill his campaign promise to completely end the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The evidence is conclusive. Obama: the abject failure and is responsible for ISIS so now we have to own it.

I disagree. They aren't our problem till they come here and start killing.

Right now they are killing Muslims and others in the ME. Hope they kill them all because I could give shit one how many Muslims they kill.

That's why Chuckie isn't defense secretary anymore.

ISIS is not an existential threat to the US like Nazi Germany or the USSR.

always amusing watching people who run around bragging how "forward-looking" they are stuck in a Cold War mentality

100% stupid and liberal as always, of course. They want to cut our heads off while we are alive, they have bio weapons, and they sit very close to the world's oil supply.

Are you still pooping on this thread hoping to get attention, Special Ed?

100% stupid and liberal as always, of course. ISIS wants to cut our heads off while we are alive, they have bio weapons, and they sit on top of the world's oil supply. They are a huge threat that only the the stupid and the liberal would fail to see.

Special Ed, when they get a massive invasion fleet to come over here, then their 'cutting off our heads" thing might be a real worry. But right now, the only people getting their heads cut off are the ones who were stupid enough to go over there to start with.

Oooh, scary bio-weapons. What is this, a comic book?

Special Ed, when you sign up for the military, I'll take your chest-beating seriously.

Countries like Iran and North Korea have shown everyone how nuclear programs are really difficult to pull off in the face of opposition, given how a country needs such a big research base and GDP to be able to build them, as well as a _lot_ of time, but a biological weapons program could be conducted with a bit more secrecy; meaning Ukraine tomorrow could kill everyone in Moscow and no-one would see it coming.

Bioweapons are here to stay, if only because smaller parties can't compete with bigger parties. Doesn't matter if it's we're talking about people, economics, or countries, without an equaliser the bigger party will always win. Bioweapons are that equaliser. Non-state actors can get them, states can get them, they can be used as terror weapons, against military targets... They're just a really easy (again, comparatively speaking) weapon to build and utilise.

Except no one would ever use such a weapon for a very good reason.

There's no such thing as a patriotic germ. The reason no one uses bioweapons is that they are as much a danger to your side as the enemy.

Is there some nasty shit sitting in labs? Yup. But we are in more danger from a disgruntled lab employee using them against our own than a foreign group using it.

100% stupid as always since they and nerve weapons already have been used many many times. Too stupid for words ISIS would love to hit NYC and would not care one bit if it killed 1000's of their own in the process.

Does the utter moron liberal understand now?
