Why is the rate of obesity higher among the poor?

American nation suffers from obesity severely. I have some question to participants.
Why is the rate of obesity higher among the poor? Wouldn't you expect the opposite?
And what explains the differing rates of obesity among various races?
Also, the rate of obesity tends to be about the same for men and women, and this holds true when looking at individual races.
One strange thing, however, is that among African-americans, the rate of obesity is significantly higher among women. Why would this be?

A lot of poverty comes from bad decision making. One area where people can make bad decisions on a daily basis is in food and exercise.
It is not only those living in poverty that make bad decisions with their diet and physical activity levels. Many middle class and wealthy individuals do much the same.

IMO most Americans know little about the conditions of their food supply. Much of our food supply is not only lacking in nutrition, but is harmful to health. The numerous chemicals...herbicides, pesticides, fungicides, hormones, steroids, etc................add in our contaminated water supply containing harmful chemicals like chlorine and fluoride...and who knows what else......along with the harmful effects of sugar, high fructose corn syrup, GMO grains, etc....and you have a perfect storm of ill health across all income levels.

And our massive and expensive federal government is not only NOT protecting us, they have colluded with big corporations to in affect, poison us.

Cheap food is typically fat food. If you have to work two jobs to survive, you go for easy and cheap. When you can get a meal at McDonald's cheaper and faster than you can prepare at home, that's what you do.
So, being lazy makes a person fat...

Who knew grandma was right.

Because the poor in this country don't have trouble affording food.

THey do have trouble affording gym member ships.

Also, working poor likely to not have the time or transportation to get to gyms.

In a first world nation, being thin is a luxury.
Your first sentence was correct.

However, it isn't gym memberships that are the problem. It is food choices that are the problem. Those who are poor are very often uneducated and lazy...they grabs whats fast.....

"Grabs what's fast"?

Yep, covered that with my time comment.

THE lower you are on the totem pole the less likely you are to dare be late.

The stock boy is late? Fire his ass.

THe District Manager doesn't show up at all? Don't even comment on it.

Clock moves at the same speed every single second of every single day. Being late is NOT an excuse for poor nutritional habits.

Try again.

Because healthy food has gone up 90% in the last twenty years and unhealthy food has dropped by 50% in the same time frame.

And also because the very ones you talk about are not into portion control or exercising. Chicken is still relatively inexpensive but how many bake it instead of fry it?

What is this obsession with other peoples WEIGHT?

my gawd how it that ANYONES business or problems.

You every work 60 plus hours a week? Or two jobs?

If you can do that, and have the time to exercise and eat right, then pat yourself on the back, for you are special.

Considering the cost to society, and the way insurance works, ESPECIALLY if Obamacare remains the law of the land, then it is everyone's business.

It's not a question of only the poor making bad food, exercise, and healthcare decisions, but poverty goes along with poor decision making skills. Obviously, it's a generalization and there are some well educated and healthy thin people just like there are some stupid and fat people in the middle and upper classes, but on the whole, those in poverty tend to stay there because they aren't making the best of decisions and food and healthcare go right along with that.

As far know what goes into food, the average American is learning more and more which is why we're seeing more food with less artificial ingredients. The biggest reason preprocessed foods even exist now is because of convenience and time. It's simply easier and quicker to buy a box of stuffing than to make it from scratch.

add in our contaminated water supply containing harmful chemicals like chlorine and fluoride...and who knows what else......

Your local water utility will supply a detailed chemical analysis of your district's water completely free of charge.
