Why is it that so many conservatives are no longer interested in conserving natural resources?

Conservation.

It is (or at least it used to be) a concept that conservatives embraced. In fact, Teddy Roosevelt was on the vanguard of the conservation movement through the establishment of our national parks. Now, conservatives routinely setting aside public lands for preservation.

In fact, very often today I hear conservatives mock the concept of conservation. As an example of that, it's not uncommon for some conservatives to come on this board on Earth Day and proudly proclaim that they fully intend on turning on every light in their homes with the intention of leaving them on all night.

What happened to the conservative movement to make them abandon one of their core beliefs and instead embrace waste up to and including the destruction of our natural environment?

The wholesale sellout of the Right to the corporations began early in the seventies.

Read the Powell Memorandum sometime. Lewis Powell Jr., a key founder of modern conservative pro-business extremism...

The Powell Memo or the Powell Manifesto Text and Analysis

Contemporary conservatives think that capitalism is a form of gov't and therefore if something doesn't turn a profit then it has to be plowed under. Funny coming from them since vietraq cost this great nation dearly & they were cheering it on the whole time to this day.

Its actually just the opposite Dotty. As it's proven over and over again that when you put land into "commons", there is no personal interest in not abusing it. In Africa, when the govts attempted to run the all the wildlife land, it was constantly plundered and abused. When they released it to LOCAL control, the folks discovered new CAPITALIST methods to make it valuable to them. When your livelihood depends on the tourism and research that occurs in your little slice of nature -- you tend to protect and defend it much better..

Same story with fishing commons versus site licenses. The "owners" and leasees will spend their time and money to assure that it's not abused or overfished and act to improve its health..

True story dude... Capitalizing on nature aint always a bad thing..

The coming End of Days makes a clean planet moot.

That, and the Dominionist movement.

Conservatives and the NRA were the first organizations who cared about the environment. When they used to call them "conservationists", American conservative sportsmen were campaigning to preserve the streams and the outdoors before smarmy pot heads decided that American decadence was the cause of worldwide social ills.

The NRA actually has a loooong history of opposing protection for any endangered species and pushes to open pretty much any wilderness to hunting.

In fact one of the ways Big Oil and the NRA work together is to remove federal regulations on land use....Big Oil gets to drill and the NRA gets to shoot animals, win win.
Most presidents in the 20th century were members of the NRA. There is no record of the NRA ever opposing protection for endangered species. I hate to inform sissie progs but every wilderness is open to legal hunting and always was. If it wasn't the sissie smarmy elitist left wing idiots would be calling 911 every time bambi wandered into their neighborhood.

Have no clue what the OP is talking about, with over 13 million hunters out there they do more to conserve nature then some tree hugger in New York city

For the unread who think republicans or conservatives don't support conservationhttps://greenlaw.blogs.law.pace.edu/2011/04/01/cwa101/

Oh yeah I guess they forgot Nixon created the EPA

Two term republican president teddy Roosevelt created the national park system.

This has already been posted many times but the govt already owns too much land for so called conservation. Remember this map, does not include state owned lands. Conservation lands owned by the govt are like welfare to liberals, there can never be enough.

Perhaps you've heard of Central Park. It's a large preserve of land smack dab in the middle of some of the most expensive real estate in the world.
yea, that's where that lady got gang raped a few years back.

How does that compare to getting raped in a pool hall in Texas.

About as much as getting raped in central park.

Because it's a lie. Conservatives love the environment as much as anyone else. Only scumbag political opportunists suggest otherwise.

Wolves are the natural predators and should be allowed to dine on Bambi, unfortunately their numbers were massively hit by over-hunting. There is nothing wrong with hunting deer, and it should be actively encouraged.

It is ironic that hunters now have to take place of wolves in the eco-system, given that centuries ago hunters devastated wolf numbers.

Bullshit...Democrats and their environmental goons want to use the government to control business and individual rights through a plethora of unnecessary laws and regulations. That's what all Americans should be knowledgeable enough to understand.

Pay off the Democratic Party political machine and the environment will always take a back seat. That's the reality.

They ARE interested in CONSERVATION. They are not interested in ENVIRONMENTALISM. The two are diametrically opposed. Conservationism cares about critters while the modern environmental movement is about the acquisition of power and the control of people.

As usual your post is filled with things that are wrong.
Teddy Roosevelt was not a conservative. Roosevelt was a Progressive.
But also as usual, policies that progressives pursue to some end usually end up achieving the opposite. Here the issue is called "The tragedy of the commons" where commonly-owned property ends up getting depleted. The solution is the opposite of commonly owned, usually termed capitalism.
The biggest fans of conservation are hunters and sportsmen, and they are the biggest supporters financially.
