It's neither new nor is it Mexico........

What's so new about it?

The Spaniards who had already conquered Mexico had heard tales of wealth further north in what we now call the Southwest so sent expeditions to search for that wealth. Eventually they named the area they conquered New Mexico which included all of what is now Texas, Colorado, Arizona and California. When the US took the remaining "northern" lands from the Mexicans after the Mexican American War they kept the name of the area that is now the State of New Mexico.
