Why Does It Cost 1 Billion Dollars To Run For Office?

And that's for the position of President.

The other government local and statewide also cost a pretty penny and rising.

Who agrees with these exorbitant prices for these public offices?

What kind of representative you think will win when it costs so much to run and win for office?

You think it will ever make a difference who wins with things going on like this?

Your thoughts.

if anyone would ok spending a billion dollars for a 400 thousand dollar a year job then you should not wonder why we have the problems we have now with finances....i heard the President ask once...."how much money do you really need to live?"......well i will ask him......"how much money do you need to spend for a job that pays 400 thousand a year of the peoples money?".......if ANY Politician really cares about how much of the Tax Payers money is being spent wisely.....they then they should also care about how much they spend to get their jobs......

All those words and still not a clear answer from you.

What's your answer to fix this problem?

That is if you see it as a problem the way it is right now.

They only get the money people are willing to give them. If Americans closed their pocket books to these politicians maybe they'd get the message.

You think the average American makes up the bulk of these donations?

I can tell you why they need a bil, because 24 hr news networks have turned politics into gossip trash and made politicians celebrities.

It shouldn't cost 1 billion dollars for a campaign. Crap like this shows our politicians only care about money and how much they can raise, those pay offs are sweet.

My answer, limit the amount that can be spent. The Presidency pays $400,000.00 per year, that's it, that's all anyone can spend to get elected, same for congressmen, $174,000 for senators and representatives. Same for judges, governors, mayors, etc.

If you limit the amount of money they can use, you eliminate a lot of palms being greased. To keep it out of court, limit the total amount not the amount each person can donate.

I can't remember where, but I saw this stated perfectly earlier, obummer spent almost a billion last election because nobody knew who he was, and this election will cost him a billion because everyone does know who he is.

I'm in full support of electoral reform, time and money should be greatly reduced. This half a presidential term used for campaigning is just as bad as the money involved.

Let's put it in perspective. How much do they spend trying to get us to eat Doritos? 2 million for just one ad during the Super Bowl.

If anything, running for president is cheap because the Idiocy of the Electoral College limits the actual race to a few states. If we had one man, one vote, it would probably be more expensive.

To wit, it costs a billion dollars to get a job running an organization that spends 3 trillion every year and effects a 15 trillion dollar economy. Money attracts money. If the government weren't as large and intrusive as it is, just did the things the constitution required and nothing more, you would not have as many monied interests trying to influence the process.

To wit. Before 2000, Microsoft had only two paid lobbyists in Washington. And lo and behold, MS less successful competitors had a lot more, and for a few years, the government was bent on breaking up Microsoft for no other reason than it was big. Well, Bill Gates learned his lesson, and has his own lobbyists and works both sides of the house.

Lawyers cost money. Image consultants cost money. Makeup and hair specialists costs money. Silk Hugo Boss and Armani suits cost money. Opposition research costs money. Bus tours cost money. Feature length films about the Osama Bin Laden takedown costs money.

It takes a ton of money to make Obama look good when he can't even run on his record.

you limit everyone to say 50 million.....and you campaign just a month or two before election day......if you go over that amount your out (obviously that candidate cant manage a budget)......if you run out way before....oh well, you had better hope your views are known ( and i guess this candidate cant budget to well either).....if the people cant make up their minds in a 2 month Campaign window then maybe those people should not be voting....if the Campaigners cant tell everyone what their positions are in a 2 month window maybe they should not be running......a good LEADER can get his/her point across in a 2 month period....the flip floppers cant....

Very simple...the rich and powerful have taken over our Republic. The only way it could be plainer would be a royalty/peon system.

The facts are just coming out. They've been doing it for 30 years. Borrowing money from foreign banks to fund tax cuts of trillions of which half go to the wealthiest Americans.

IMO 50 million is still too much, other than that I agree with you. Teaching them how to budget and then enforcing it just might make them a better elected official. :)

Big money in politics all but guarantees that your and my vote is virtually meaningless.

Especially when one considers the fact that when a bill which is important to corporations is being argued there are about 3000 high paid lobbyists walking the halls of the Capitol building wearing their $2500 suits, imported shoes and swinging a Gucci briefcase. Who is representing ordinary Americans?

Same guys, but if it'll make you feel any better they could switch to Wranglers, food stained Members Only shirts, and a pair of old Air Jordans.

Everything you just said you stand for is EXACTLY what the #OccupyWallStreet movement stands for.

Imagine that.

I guess I should expect partisanship from a rabid rightwinger. I guess you imagine that it will cost much less for the or any future Republican candidate to run and possibly win the Presidential Office?

Absolutely right. Limiting the campaigning time is a DEFINITE step in the right direction. Right now they spend at least HALF their time campaigning. You hear the talk of the next election 1/4th of the time in towards it.

Madness.

Because it costs money to brainwash the general public with propaganda...

Ron Paul has raised some money yet hes winning straw polls without any propaganda.

Wait until next summer and fall - it will be Obama TV on every network - every other commercial will be an Obama commercial...
