Why do we want Puerto Rico

Looking at following from Wikipedia, I'm not sure there is any overwhelming desire for statehood.

In the most recent of these plebisites, in 1998, Puerto Ricans, by a slight majority, voted for "none of the above", a choice that has been variously interpreted: "One might say, looking at the result of the 1998 plebicite, that the people of Puerto Rico exercised their inalienable right to self-determination, and a majority of them -- fully 50.3 percent, to be exact -- chose to remain a colony.

Exactly...That's what the upcoming vote is about.

The Fabian socialist "progressives" in PR are holding a vote that would disqualify NOTA as one of the choices in the next vote on statehood/sovereignty.

They're nothing if not sneaky little shits.

yeah, and you're kinda cool for a rightwingnut. ;)

but how do you know i'm not puerto rican? :eusa_whistle:

i am from ny, you know.

j/k... i'm not. but i could be.
Naaaaaaah, couldn't be!...You actually have a functioning brain. Unlike J-Lo and the rest of her ilk!

Besides, you're a blond sooooooooooo. Oh wait a minute. I've seen Puerto Rican broads who dye their hair blonde. They look like total freaks but......what color are your eyebrows?

What's up with the Puerto Rican jokes???

i wasn't making puerto rican jokes. ;)

i was simply pointing out that i could as easily be puerto rican as i could anything else.

We need to either admit them as a state or let them go. I'm sick of supporting them.
Right-o.

But should they be admitted as a state due to political chicanery, in order to secure more votes for one political party or another?

Sorry about the PDF, but it's salient to this issue.

So you agree they should be told to shit or get off the pot, but object to the fact that it may be advantageous to a party you despise and politicans have realized that. If you want to wait until they go Libertarian to bring them in, we'll be supporting them till Hell freezes over you know.

We'll never not support them. They're latino, a protected class now.

RINO's don't want them gone anymore than Dems do.

Looks like they're staying.

If they voted to be independent they would be gone. I doubt faced with the choice of statehood or independence they would choose independence, but you never know. And if we're keeping it, just make it a State so it has the responsibilities as well as the rights of statehood. It's a no-brainer, no matter which way their ballots tend to fall.

This is how stupid our politicians truly are.

Thanks to Obama, the next two/three genrations are completely screwed. So now they want to saddle them with another damn welfare state of useless people to help further suck this country dry.

It's friggin' insanity!

Purto Ricans like baseballs. Just toss 'em a few boxes of baseballs and tell 'em to shut the fuck up!

Same goes for those damn mexican motherfuckers!

I'm not waiting for them to go libertarian. Even so, they have the right to vacillate and hem-haw all they want until they're of a mind that a majority of them want it one way or the other, with NOTA as a legit choice as well.

The converse, of course, is whether we should also admit USVI, Guam and American Samoa as states, using the same duplicitous methods?

If the US decides NOTA is not in our national interests and should no longer be a choice, why does Puerto Rico, or Guam, or any other territory get to dictate terms? I say give them all the choice, statehood or the door.

As far as duplicity, puh-leeeze. Like this is any worse or even different from the same old same old that's been happening in American politics since the barroom swap meets at the Constitutional Convention?
