Why do Republicans feel taxpayers should subsidize Wal-Mart and McDonald's?

You are correct

Republicans attack the poor and working poor from both ends.

Not handing out free money to people that doesn't belong to them does not equal attacking the poor. Stealing money from people who have more and redistributing it to others, however, does equal attacking the working class.

They support policies that hold down wages and benefits and then try to slash government assistance

The only wage and benefits you deserve is what you and your employer agree to when you take the job. If you don't like the agreement seek employment elsewhere. Nobody is forced at gun point to work at Walmart.

It comes down to helping those who need help....A concept that enrages conservatives

I know of plenty of conservatives who help those who need help. Confiscating other people's property against their will by use of force is not charity. It's theft and it's immoral.

Taxing the wealthy to benefit the society that they have prospered from is what modern societies do

Says who?

Americans are spending $153 billion a year to subsidize McDonald’s and Wal-Mart’s low wage workers

The low wages paid by businesses, including some of the largest and most profitable companies in the U.S. – like McDonald’s and Wal-Mart – are costing taxpayers nearly$153 billion a year.

After decades of wage cuts and health benefit rollbacks, more than half of all state and federal spending on public assistance programs goes to working families who need food stamps, Medicaid, or other support to meet basic needs. Let that sink in — American taxpayers are subsidizing people who work — most of them full-time (in some case more than full-time) because businesses do not pay a living wage.

Don't worry, Trump has a plan:

Donald Trump Won't Raise The Minimum Wage Because He Will Get Everyone A High-Paying Job

I don't buy this argument.

McDonalds and Wal-Mart profits COMBINED are less than $30 billion dollars a year, so how can they make up $153B if not through some price increases?

What costs us is making sure people have means to cover basic needs. It can cost us in taxes or it can cost us in higher prices, but it will cost us...and that's ok.

Simple answer, they don't.
