Why do people say the US was a Christian nation?

I can't count the number of times Christian Fundamentalits have claimed the US was founded as a Christian nation.

I am assuming most of us - and them - know that this is not true. So why repeat the lie, or is it general ignorance?

And for those who were away from school that day:

The First Amendment bars all laws “respecting an establishment of religion” and protects “the free exercise thereof.” Nothing here indicates that the latter provision applies only to Christian faiths.

Not only does the Constitution not give recognition or acknowledgment to Christianity, but it also includes Article VI, which bans “religious tests” for public office. Guaranteeing non-Christians the right to hold federal office seems antipodal to an officially Christian nation.

Because we live in a Christian nation, you don't, so we don't expect you to understand.
