WHY do people keep using boxes?

"The liberals do this"..."The conservatives do that".
It gets tiresome. If you agree or disagree with an individual, that individual is automatically a liberal or a conservative. My question is...how does anyone KNOW what anyone is? I like the color green. Am I a greeny? Then what about the rust colors I love as well?
I like chocolate shakes. But I like ice tea, too. Does that make me a chocolate lover or a tea lover? Why is it the "in" thing to do to slam labels on people and stuff them in a box when you don't know diddly squat about that person??

It makes a lightwear cover for those unable to debate, IMEURU. As in, "you cannot have a point worth listening to because you're a liberal/conservative". Or, "the facts in that source you linked are nonexistant in my world, as that media outlet is notoriously liberal/conservative."

Exactly. These are people who would like to debate, but have no skills, data or brains with which to do so. Labeling at least allows them to feel they are "in the game".

Here's the ones that annoy me most.... from both sides.

From conservatives:

Liberals hate the Constitution.
Liberals want America to be a Socialist country.
Liberals only voted for Obama because he's black.
Liberals aren't 'real Americans'.

From Liberals:

Conservatives are racists.
Conservatives are anti-education.
Conservatives hate science.
The TEA Parties hate Obama because he's black.

Oh, it seriously pisses me off when EITHER 'side' calls people on the other 'side' Nazis or Hitler. No one, no party, no movement, no individual, no group of individuals should ever be compared to a political party or individual that was responsible for the mass slaughter of millions of innocent people.

Some people have no capability to grasp ideas outside their own little worlds. They live in those little worlds listening to the same people without attempting to widen their knowledge or to listen to other points of view. To them it is either you agree with them on everything or you are an enemy. If they come to the table to discuss an issue they have a closed mind and come to persuade you to their point of view and if you do not agree with them you are wrong and an idiot.

This is not a liberal or conservative thing but a general condemnation of the human race. Not all of us fall into this catagory but a large part of the population do. As human beings we are all subject to err and make wrong decisions or have bad ideas. It is through this process that we grow and learn and become better people. Those who do not learn from their mistakes or errors in judgment are doomed to repeat them and become failures in life.

Ohh a few factors it prevents them from actually thinking if they just throw all those who disagree with them in a "box"

They are programmed by the media and their party to act this way.

Neither party wants their members to actually think for themselves, if might cause them to see falacies and flaws in their party.

And many are just of the binary mindset. This or that and nothing in between.

The part I find interesting is that whereas polarization among party members seems to be as high as ever, it also seems the two parties themselves are more similar than ever?

Yep I watched a show on PBS I think it was last night on that very subject.

Read a string of someone's posts and you can generally tell which side of an argument the person's persona will come down on. How they act in real life is anyone's guess. Politics in itself gets pretty tiresome. A couple of opposing philosophies try to win support for their cause by raising tons of money and do some strategic marketing. The people will never be happy with anyone. We are polite enough to let each other play incumbent from time to time, however. It keeps everyone semi happy and keeps the rest of the world guessing what we're gonna do next.
The real power players just keep track so they know where to keep their fortunes invested.

It's easier to store things in boxes rather than bags.

I once tried to store the christmas lights in bags....bad move.

Boxes are easier.

Is that the answer you were looking for?

When I was little my grandpa let me have the box from his TV. I remember just sitting in there and I had a folded up blanket that I would sit on. But I ended up spilling pop in it and my mom got all pissed the next day because there was like an entire ant colony in the corner.

it beats thinking

I would like to point out that, sometimes, boxes are appropriate. I have a 'tool box'.... in it, I keep rdean, TeaPartyStupid, Mr Shallow, and a couple of others.

I can't understand the desire to place oneself in a box.
I might be kidding myself but I like to consider myself as an individual.
Some of my opinions would be classed as Liberal and some as Conservative, but as a package I bet that no-one would agree exactly with me on all matters.

People do this because it is easier to debate against a strawman than a real person.

Put a label on somebody and you can stop reading to what they really say and have an argument against what you wish they'd said.

Happens here all the time, really.
