Why do Liberals Believe that Higher Taxes cause Economic Booms?

The cost of giving these tax cuts to the wealthiest will not see a return in jobs.

It was a republican lie all along.

You sad little sack of snottiness.

Nobody claimed that tax cuts alone would lead to a real economic recovery. We also need:

- Reductions in spending so that it does not exceed tax receipts
- Sound monetary policy
- The rule of law and a regulatory environment which supports it

How is keeping more of what you earn "wealth redistribution?"

One thing is for certain. "Keeping more of what you earn" not only doesn't get this nation out of debt it adds to the debt we already owe.

I always get a kick out of people who cry "It's my money!!" yet they never seem to acknowledge that it's our debt as well.

And so the huge tax cuts we give to the rich adds to the debt and deficit. This debt has to be repaid so we cut spending. But much of the spending is cut in areas that benefit the poor and middle class.

So the ones that need it the most end up sacrificing to give the ones who have the most more of what they don't need.

No it isn't 'our' debt. I did not choose for government to take my money in taxes. Nor did I choose for them to spend more than what they took from me. Therefore I feel ZERO responsibility for the debt. Therefore congress does not have the moral right to tell me I have to pay for their irresponsibility.

It's a particularly shitty con game to spend money now and pass along the debt to toddlers still wearing training pants.

The rationale for the Republican insistence on lowering taxes for the wealthy sounds like the rationale for the Reagan Administration's support of "Trickle-down Economics"

The idea is that prosperity for the wealthy ultimately will "trickle-down" into prosperity for less affluent Americans.

I would assert that one difficulty here is that what prosperity is engendered by this approach is more likely to "trickle-down" to workers employed overseas (because of the outsourcing of jobs) than to workers that are employed in the United States.

The answer to your question, Mal, can be answered with just a few short words: Because conservatives believe that lower taxes cause economic booms.

Liberals don't have to think about it. All they need to know is what conservatives believe and they choose the opposite. /duck :eusa_whistle:

Who's a deficit hawk? Giving $700 billion in tax cuts to those who will not use that money to stimulate the economy makes no sense.

It's consumer spending that drives the economy. giving as much money to those able to spread it around will stimulate the economy. The rich will not and cannot spend the way the middle class can. Why? Too few rich and too many shelters for their gains.

And the middle class needs the extra money to survive. The rich need the money to hoard. Which plan most drives the economy?

What does that have to do with my post?

Is it not true that liberals only need look at what conservatives believe and they simply choose the opposite?

You are calling Liberals contraians and I laid out the rational case for the tax cuts to expire.

A backwater?

Did you mean to say that?

We were a nation of rich elites and dire poor.

According to Das Kapital?

Naw.

By the people that got tired of being locked in textile factories to be burned alive, or kids losing limbs that worked on machines, or having their brains blown out by oil barons if they dared speak up.

They also got tired of banks playing casino games with their money and monopolies.

They are very same people that elected FDR and kicked the shit out of the Nazis.

Some might call em commies.

But I prefer "The greatest generation".

That's a very jaded, Soviet style view of American history.

And we now know beyond any doubt at all that FDR was advised by genuine Communist spies including his top aide and advisers: Lauchlin Currie, Alger Hiss, Harry Dexter White.

No it's not.

The GI bill was the single most important factor in creating a real live middle class in this country.

That along with support for unions, glass-steagall, the FDIC and busting up monopolies.

some have no idea of history.

They jsut pretend the industrial revolution never happened

And that changes the facts how asshole?

According to you we should have had a worse economy worse than the Great Depression since our inception until Hitlers invasion of Poland

Are you really that ignorant? Did you not realize income tax started in 1913 and then was only on the top 1%?

The top rate in 1913 was 7%, and it applied to incomes over $11 Million in 2010 dollars.

And for additional points, Boedicca, please explain to the people where the money came from that ran our government up to that point.

Why do Liberals Believe that Higher Taxes cause Economic Booms?

There is a difference between liberals saying such nonsense, and Republicans ACCUSING liberals of saying such nonsense.

The right wing just makes stuff up, as always. If anything they are consistently delusional.

No, I am simply saying that liberals look at what conservatives believe and choose the opposite. In that post I did not say which one was right or wrong in regards to tax cuts. My personal belief is that there are times when tax cuts work and then there are times when they don't. This all or nothing philosophy that you all seem to have is foolish. I believe that there are times when tax cuts do work and that there are also times when increasing taxes are necessary. At this moment, I believe that whatever it takes to increase tax revenues will be superseded by a foolish congress that will take any increased revenue and spend it and more on pork.

I have given you (2) Examples on the Public Errwaves who say it... Thumb Fartmann and David Sirota...

And Caller after Caller Agrees with them.

Sorry. But it is indeed OUR debt. For you to say it isn't is a bit disingenious. And remember that continously giving out tax cuts like they were candy is doing nothing more than digging a deeper hole for us.

The wealthy get tax cuts-----
more debt is created------
we realize that this debt has to be repaid and spending needs to be cut-----
the poor and middle class suffer the lion's share of spending cuts to pay for the wealthy's tax cuts----
we ALL end up being responsible for the debt-----

And as long as you have the moral right to elect them they have the moral right to tell you to pay back your fair share of the debt that they create.

If, in your world, Liberals believe the opposite of Conservatives for no real rational reason other than to be contrary, is the reverse true? Can we then reasonably believe that Conservatives hate a clean environment? That Conservatives find no real reason to keep working class families in good paying jobs? That Conservatives hate the freedoms of speech, religion and the right to collective bargaining?

All or nothing philosophy that (we) all seem to have? Check your history vis-a-vis Conservative dogma.
