It's true that socialists don't conform to the "classical" definition of "liberal", which means "supporting and promoting liberty". Socialists do very much the opposite, using government to force people to do things very much outside the purview of good, small government. Our modern liberals do much the same thing.

As you point out, Hitler was very similar to today's liberals in his use of massive government to oppress and coerce his countrymen. Neither is "liberal" in the classical sense... but Hitler would feel right at home among today's liberals. Except for his anti-Semitism and his tendencies to massacre Jews - traits which our modern liberals do not share.
