Why do Americans take away health insurance when a person loses a job?

In a for profit system, paid for only when people are working or when they do qualify for government assistance (have to be slam broke first), it's so wonder we see this kind of stuff where people fall through the cracks in between jobs caused by lay-off's, sickness, and other. Then if they have something in their life (ownership of house etc.) that disqualifies them for government assistance, unless they are willing to give up everything that they have. Otherwise one has to become totally dependent before help arrives via the government, or one has to be working before health arrives per the private sector insurance agencies..

Most of us, if not all of us sooner or later, are just an out of step heartbeat away from total runination over one major health problem to occur one day in our lives.

You lose your vacation time, bonuses and seniority too.

It's like no one ever heard of COBRA.

Yah COBRA. Everyone can afford 1,300/mo insurance when they lose their job.

Mine nearly doubled when I lost my job several years ago due to outsourcing to INdia.

I can tell you never used COBRA.

The plutocracy offering COBRA to people that can't afford to access the healthcare system-----is like Marie Antoinette offering cake to people without food. ♋

"I don't understand why in America you would take away the health insurance when a person loses his job. Isn't that when she needs it?"

The answer is that it doesn't happen.

Any employee who is insured in an employer sponsored plan has the right to continue that plan using COBRA.
When it comes to preserving ones life, then everything is on the table, so what kind of questions do you ask again? I will ask you then, now how can people keep insurance running with no job, especially with what they will be bringing in from an entitlement program or worse barely nothing in the way of affordablity of these things afterwards or upon getting on one of these programs ?

No one knows where a person is or will be at when layed off or they become sick in their lives that causes them to lose their job. I mean they could have all sorts of bills and such, that will keep them from hanging on very long, if they have to try and stay afloat in such a dire situation, but people are quick to spin and skew the facts on them, just because they don't want them to become a burdon upon the system or them, in which they feel cannot handle the situation when it happens, so they just wish these people would just die or somehow fade away into the bliss (clean it all up somehow) ?

I'm new to this site but accuracy doesn't seem to be a real strong point here. The statement says "the crowd yells let him die", this is simply wrong. One, perhaps two, individuals agreed with the hosts suggestion that someone who finds themselves in the position of desperately needing a major medical insurance policy but not having one should not have his medical expenses covered by money confiscated from hard working, tax paying citizens. The "crowd" did no such thing.

BTW as I pointed out I'm new here so I don't know everyone's personality yet but are you aware of how ridiculous it makes you seem when you post comments like Republicans don't like people.

Harvard researchers say 62% of all personal bankruptcies in the U.S. in 2007 were caused by health problems—and 78% of those filers had insurance

Employer based plans. hmm, I see.

when people get ill and needed help paying COBRA, where do they go?

COBRA has a time limit and it is not a replacement for adequate health insurance.

I got help paying mine when I was struck with a very serious infection I was lucky to recover from. Without the financial help there's a good chance I might have expired before the listed expiration date. :eusa_pray:

If you didn't it wouldn't be called insurance......it would be called an entitlement.

Entitlement is a dirty word now?
