Why do American cable networks lack creativity?

The big three cable networks give us nothing but sitcoms, reality shows, and cop shows. Why isn't there more diversity in genres? You know space opera and epic fantasy! Why can't TV be as exciting as the Hollywood action movies? Does TV not get as much money as an Hollywood action flick? Does something in American adult life zap people of their imagination and creativity?

I challenge these TV show makers to give us something with space battles, daring military actions, parachute jumps through a planet’s atmosphere, and high-stakes politics. Maybe some romance too.

Capitalism. The problem with the Big 3 networks is they refuse to take risks because they have to answer to advertisers because they charge too much for airtime.

How is this "Politics"?

TV is inherently uncreative. It has no choice. It's limited to a two-dimensional screen that plops its viewer down and dictates every sensory input. Its function is to advertise, and that's all it's good for. If one considers zombifying people to sell them shit they don't need "good".

Why do you watch the Big 3? There are more channels on my TV than I can even properly surf.

In short, you're complaining that no one has started the JakeWills network.

Movies are usually 2D, so that's not the core issue ---- it IS the material. They steal ideas from each other rather than do the hard stuff.

There's usually one or two new shows a season that lock me in.
In marketing there's this thing about long tail distributions. You look at the popularity of the genres that appeal to ADVERTISERS and viewers and you take the top 60 to 80% and wear the hell of those. THe rest get ignored.

But --- more channels, more distribution choices, more internet CATERS to those "long skinny tails" of the distribution that get cut off for efficiency. Like Space Operas. BUT Netflix or a Hulu could pick them up and serve those niches. Google space opera --- I bet there's HOURS of great material .. :2up:

If you think they have no diversity in their shows, watch their news...its the exact same shit on all 3 networks.

The hideous bitch goddess of entertainment is a never ending task and has ruined a good many humans from over work to supply the masses with a chance to escape reality...Feel you can do better, crack open the journal and write, then deliver it with yourself to a producer...good luck, and break both legs.....

Well in reality you have never worked in the field of broadcasting, so I don't expect you to understand how running a business in broadcasting is a tight budgeted affair..

And they won't. Unless it sells. If it sells then it's all hands on deck. That's the bottom line, always has been.
