The best I have is that the Dems were playing to their base in rushing the Impeachment asap. It's possible they thought maybe they wouldn't win in the courts if they challenged the President's claim to executive privilege, which might've ended the Impeachment process altogether if the courts declare that they didn't have enough reason to override the Presidents right to EP. That would give political cover to those jumpy Dems from red and purple states and districts to require a Censure instead of an Impeachment.

And/or the Dems may have believed that Schumer could find a way to get enough GOP Senators to vote with him on the witnesses that they wanted. There are a few Repub senators who are vulnerable in the next election, and might be a little nervous about losing their seats enough to support the call for witnesses. If they cave then the Dems get their witnesses, and if they don't then those vulnerable Senate Repubs might become even more vulnerable, maybe enough to flip their seat. So, they sat on the Articles of Impeachment to kind of let those senators hear from their constituents over the Christmas break, hoping to soften them up a little bit. But, unfortunately for the Dems, it didn't work. None of them supported calling for more witnesses before the trial; we'll see what happens next week after both sides have made their case and questions have been asked and answered.
