From what I can tell the school in Oregon is a religious college.

Why was this "atheist" taking classes there?

Did he go there and take classes therefore obviously planning this shooting much farther in advance than people think he did?

Umpqqua Community College is not a religious school. It's a 2 year community college. Umpqua Community College, Roseburg, Oregon - Umpqua Community College
They do not have any religious affiliation.

A community college Is a religious school??

Based on the fact that he asked the victims if they were Christians, then killed them if they answered yes. Pretty good indication he was targeting Christians. Even you should be able to put 2 and 2 together.
