LOUISIANA, Mo. — A man wanted for questioning in the abduction of a 4-year-old Missouri girl has died after shooting himself as police officers arrived at his home, police said Thursday.

The man died Wednesday night at St. Joseph's Hospital in St. Charles, Missouri State Highway Patrol Sgt. Al Nothum said. His name has not been released.

It was a gruesome twist to the story of Alisa Maier, a little girl with big brown eyes who was snatched from the front yard of her Louisiana, Mo., home about 8 p.m. Monday while her mother was inside cooking dinner. Her 6-year-old brother, Blake, told police a young man in a dark-colored car pulled up and ordered Alisa to get in.

A little more than 24 hours later, a dark-colored car was seen at a car wash in St. Louis County, some 70 miles to the south. About the same time, a child was seen wandering around the car wash. It turned out to be Alisa.

Police followed up on more than 100 leads in the search for her kidnapper. About 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, officers approached a tiny home in Hawk Point, Mo., a small community that sits between Louisiana and St. Louis County. As officers sought to talk to a man they described as a "person of interest," he pulled out a handgun and shot himself.

he kidnapped the little one...cut her hair..then put her out in a parking lot...then killed himself...did he realize what he intended to do...did he fight the demons and resist molesting her...(so far they are saying she is fine with no signs of it) did he realize he had to die?

This is going to be hard to understand, but 99% of the time, in virtually all of the cases, it turns out that the abuser also suffered sexual abuse at the hands of a drunk parent/step parent/foster parent as a child.

i am so sick of that bullmal excuse and do you realize what an insult that is to people who were molested as kids and dont molest? there is no excuse for child molestation.

I agree hellbitch that child molestation is unexecusable. I also understand such pathology is generational in nature. The immediate family (parents, siblings, spouse, children) of a convicted molester should be carefully investigated for such behavior

It's two separate groups.

Not all molested children grow into molesters, but almost 100% of the abusers were abused themselves.

The defense is unacceptable. Child molestation is unacceptable. A mad dog, regardless of cause, is put down. A child molester, regardless of cause, should be put away and the immediate family carefully, thoroughly investigated. Sterilization of the entire family might be called for.

Each person makes their own choices, but people also have a history to them. What kind of person harms a kid? Oftimes someone who has a history themselves.

This does not excuse or justify, but it explains.

there is a famous case from austria of a kid who ran away from home at 16 because of a long history of physical abuse from an alcoholic father. the kid was the product of an incestuous marriage, and died at age 55 after a long career of crime and murder. We can understand his career better if we understand how he grew up, but it justifies nothing.

Sounds like a plausible theory to me.

Good for him!

Do you know who Gary Ridgeway is?

At his sentencing, the families of his victims were allowed to speak and all but one of them launched into a barrage of how they wanted to kill him for his crimes.

One father, who lost his daughter told him, he couldn't imagine what it was like growing up as Gary Ridgeway and found some extrahumanly way to actually utter the words, "I forgive you" to the man who murdered his daughter.

That brought the Gary Ridgeway, the Green River Killer, murderer of at least 48 women to inconsolable tears.
