Why Cut Down the Trees

It has been claimed that there are more trees east of the Mississippi then there were when the white man arrived. I don’t know about that but it is a fact that trees are great mitigators of carbon in the atmosphere.

While driving to NC on I-75 south of Atlanta I marveled at the forest of full grown trees on the expressway right of way. It was beautiful and intensely green from all the rain. No more. From Macon North some genius has decided to cut every piece of green down. Mulchers and chainsaws have cut it all. Every cloverleaf in north Georgia is being for all intents and purposes clear cut. Why? Where are the environmentalists? What is the point. How much is this costing. How much more will it cost to replant? This is just plain stupid and ugly. What could possibly be the reason for this?

Have not been down there in a long time, true?. I think I believe you..

They are greedy and ignorant.

The two death knells for the human race.

Money.

The trees are being cut to make wood pellets to be burned in europe. Great swaths of trees are being cut down to fuel the "green" desire for biomass... You can drive through Wilmington NC, or Moorehead City, or several other port cities along the coat and the smell of trees being turned into pellets for european power plants hangs heavy in the air. They claim it is carbon neutral. It is neither greed nor money...it is green ignorance and madness. Much akin to making fuel out of food while much of the world starves...or sacrificing raptors, bats, and migratory birds in record numbers for an unreliable energy source.....all in the name of their crazy ideas about CO2.

By the way.....in the studies that claim that burning biomass is carbon neutral.....they conveniently leave out the part about actually burning the biomass.

Biomass energy: N.C. trees become U.K. power, but not without controversy | Port City Daily

Why U.S. Forests Are Fueling Europe

Europe's 'renewable' energy plan is actually destroying US forests

Almost 100 percent of this abundant US energy source is being shipped overseas

How Europe’s climate policies led to more U.S. trees being cut down

Yup ..the pellet mills are everywhere down here ..

I'm not familiar with this area so I Google mapped it. I-75 goes through a giant forest, in fact, most of GA is a forest. A couple trees really doesn't matter. Actually, it's algae and marine plants that give off 80 percent of the world's oxygen and they are thriving right now due to warmer oceans. I wouldn't worry about it, there are far more important things to worry about.

Ridiculous.
Ridiculous turning american trees into pellets to be burned in european power plants, or ridiculous, being the best argument you could put up in an effort to defend this indefensible practice?

What's funny is they spend millions on machinery to turn it into pellets just to send to europe, then they turn the pellets into saw dust because they say it burns better. ..

Transforming wood that can burn into wood that can burn is pretty close to as absurd as things can get.

I live here and you have no idea what your talking about. Yes it’s beautiful here in GA more trees than any other state I’ve lived in. It’s very lush and thick with green here.

But let me say that you could cut down a 50 square miles of forest down and it wouldn’t make a dent. And let me add that if you were to do that you would be boosting business because there are literally tons of people down here that have everything from mulching business, lumber outlets, all the way to people selling firewood in their front lawns on every other block.

I am a member of a hunting club in Columbus GA... it consists of about 30 square miles on either side of the highway. For about 6 or 7 years we have our camp and hunting spots in one area of the 60+ square miles while another part of the property is cut down and logged...
When they do finish logging that area we move camp and set up feeders for new places to hunt while they log our previous camp, so on and so on.

I don’t know where your from but when you say how much it will cost to replant I figure you don’t know what your talking about.

It’s not like the inner city park where you have to dig a hole and plant a young tree every 10 feet… after logging you’ve got enough seeds on the ground from what you just knocked out of the trees that all you have to do is wait and they will grow. Not to say they don’t seed the ground afterwards but if you knew anything about living in a forest like part of the world you would know that once it starts, it thrives.

We try to keep the environmentalists AWAY from beautiful things because it seems that where ever they go things turn to sh*t. Just look at CA, what used to be the most beautiful state in the USA is now the Garbage State with homeless people throwing their trash EVERYWHERE and using the bathroom on the sidewalks with nobody bothering to do anything but step over it and act like it never happened.

Georgia has a great and wonderful economy, so before you start to question our methods how about do some research on what your talking about.

Building with wood is fine. Wood for heating is a great renewable energy source. Turning it into pellets, with all the extra energy spent doing it, is bizarre.

Guys, I have been driving through Georgia for fifty years. If Georgia is so full of trees, why are we cutting trees down on the expressway right of way, and I have no idea where they are going. My only point is that for an expressway with six lanes, full grown trees are beautiful and they take a long time to grow. And many were hardwoods, not slash pines. Now, it is nothing but dirt. And yes it costs a lot of money to clear cut and mulch all this land and to replant, to do what? To get what we already had. Who is paying for this and why are we paying for this.

I am all for, logging, hunting, using renewable resources, but I also think there should be places where commercialism takes a back seat to natural beauty.think about how many people from all over the country driving through Atlanta and south on 75 to Disney World admire and comment on how beautiful it is in the state of Georgia. Isn’t that worth something? It is to me.

Beauty is a concept that a lot of people no not comprehend. The only thing green that they admire has pictures of dead Presidents on them. There are people that desire to log our watershed areas, totally ignoring the value of clean water to Portland. There are people that do not admire the beautiful Colombia Gorge at all, and one that even set fire to it. He will spend the rest of his life under a 36.5 million dollar debt.

Says the guy who has no problem with ruining hundreds of square miles of natural beauty with windmills which spoil the landscape and give the added bonus of shredding raptors, bats and migratory birds....or covering miles of ground with solar cells... Clearly you place your ideology above natural beauty.
