with impunity no less... i wrote this this afternoon after researching it a bit and getting pissed.

Human rights abusers and war criminals are now treating America as a retirement opportunity, living openly with impunity. They come from forgotten, overlooked war zones and oppressive regimes like Guatemala, Iran, Chile, Serbia, Romania and Columbia, among many others. They are not terrorists in the vein of Osama Bin Laden or grand dictators like Saddam Hussein, but they’ve terrorized thousands of people, robbing them of their freedom, their dignity, sometimes even their lives. They’ve been allowed to live in America, and some have even become citizens.

Of the 2.5 million persons who’ve been granted asylum in America, over 500,000 of them were victims of torture or worse in their former countries. For many, there is an added fear and humiliation parceled with anguished memories of pain and loss. They’ve been made aware, either through the media or their own shocked eyes that their tormentors live free here or travel easily to America. They’ve come to the land of the free and justice for all only to find no freedom from fear and no justice for the inhumane crimes committed against them. Americans who love their newfound country and appreciate it much more than most of us who take it for granted are still living in fear, as if they were back in their oppressive homelands.

For these war criminals and human rights violators to live safely and openly in America is enraging, especially for those of us who are defending this nation and its allies against terrorists who use similar heinous methods against innocent people. It would seem unbelievable that despite clear, express backing from Congress (passed in 1994), the government has failed to bring a single charge (in the face of mountains of evidence and survivor testimony to support any federal case) against any of the hundreds of human rights abusers who live here, nor the hundreds who visit this great nation every year. Its now well apparent that only through public pressure will these torturers and murderers ever face trial in an American courtroom, and justice finally be provided for the tens of thousands of survivors and their departed loved ones. Please help your fellow Americans to finally find justice and closure.
