I spent the previous three weeks in the US and thus got to see lots of political TV-ads. What struck me is how uniformly bad they were. Actually not just bad, but simply atrocious. No quality, no real appeal, no content, no style, nothing.
I've been following US Presidential campaigns for about 30 years now and as they've gotten more expensive the quality of the ads has gotten steadily worse. And this goes for both camps and for both the "approved" ads and the ads by "independent" advocacy groups. This time round it's especially bad.
Some of the ads for other offices (senate races etc) were a bit better but only marginally so (and they were far fewer).
Why is it that these well-funded campaigns can't get decent, original ads produced. Pretty sad.
