Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama and his wife Michelle gave $10,772 of the $1.2 million they earned from 2000 through 2004 to charities, or less than 1 percent, according to tax returns for those years released today by his campaign.

The Obamas increased the amount they gave to charity when their income rose in 2005 and 2006 after the Illinois senator published a bestselling book. The $137,622 they gave over those two years amounted to more than 5 percent of their $2.6 million income.

Romney charitable contributions:

Tax year Taxable income Charitable donations Donations as % of income
2010 $21.7 million $2.98 million 13.73%
2011 (est) $20.9 million $4 million 19.14%

A new report by ABC says his family charity, the Tyler Foundation, gave $600,000 to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 2009.

That’s some heavy tithing.

And if that’s 10 percent (the suggested giving amount in the Christian Bible) of Romney’s income for 2009, he made $6 million that year.

In the past give years, Romney’s charity has donated a total $4 million to the church, according to the report.

Firstly, there's already a thread on it.

Secondly, Romney has released his tax returns so your claim that he hasn't is bullshit.

idiot

How much someone gives to charity is not an indicator of whether or not someone is selfish and has an excessive desire for more of something than is needed.

I wonder how much of Romney's donation to the Mormon Church has been filtered into a Super PAC working to discredit his competitors for the Republican nomination?

His Charitable Foundation donates to hundreds of charities.... most of them are not connected to politics or the Mormon Church. But please don't let facts get in your way.

Al Capone gave to charity. My point is that it doesn't matter how much money someone gives away....."greed" means you want more than you need.

Democrat Dummy. Tell it to your Obamy's 'Jobs Czar' GE CEO Jeffrey Immelt. Dismissed, imbecile.

Not nearly as much as Obama's contribution to Solyndra......

I don't define greed by that yardstick. Because you need what you "think" you need. I don't need my gym membership but I don't think its a luxury I can do without. You don't need the computer you used to live. Care to give it up?

The question is silly.

It should be how much good are you willing to do. Obama is framing the debate as being between he and the middle income voters vs. the Republicans and the elite. He's doing a great job of putting just that way. It's un-nuanced (sp?) and it's going to win him a 2nd term. Whether it's the case or not...well, we'll see. The words are matching the actions thus far though.
