n 1794 thousands of farmers in western Pennsylvania took up arms in opposition to the enforcement of a federal law calling for the imposition of an excise tax on distilled spirits. Known as the "Whiskey Rebellion," this insurrection represented the largest organized resistance against federal authority between the American Revolution and the Civil War. A number of the whiskey rebels were prosecuted for treason in what were the first such legal proceedings in the United States.

Congress established the excise tax in 1791 to help reduce the $54 million national debt. The tax was loathed across the country. For a small group of farmers west of the Allegheny Mountains, the federal excise tax was singularly detestable. Bartering was the chief means of exchange in this frontier economy, and distilled spirits were the most commonly traded commodity. Cash was a disfavored currency in western Pennsylvania during the late eighteenth century, but whiskey, especially Monongahela Rye, was as valuable as gold. Whiskey was considered an all-purpose liquor, with locals using it for cooking and medicine, and drinking it at social occasions, among other uses.

Is President Obama Creating A Nation Of Dependents?

The increase in food stamps is automatically triggered by unemployment, which itself is a result of the destruction of the housing and financial sectors under Bush.

The policies for helping American working families in times of high unemployment was in place long before Obama.

Ronald Reagan's father was saved by a government work program.

A major reason for high unemployment is that America's wealthy have been shipping jobs to cheaper labor markets since the 70s. The USA no longer makes anything because investors earn a higher return on their investment when products are manufactured in freedom-hating-sweat-shop-nations.

Please research the compact between Labor and Capital during the postwar years. There were a number of policies in place that tied American capital to American labor. The resulting high wages allowed Americans to consume. And when Americans have more money in their pockets, the capitalist has to add even more jobs to capture that money.

But the high wages had another positive effect. It allowed the father to support the family on one wage so the mother could stay home and raise the family. This is why the Liberal New Deal postwar economy of the 50s and 60s was ironically the heyday of American Conservatism - because the high wages/benefits enforced by pro-labor policies allowed families to spend more time together (unlike today when latchkey kids are raised by TV. The New Deal was more pro family than anything ever created by the Right).

But let's face it. Business wanted higher profits through cheaper labor. It wanted lower operating costs. So Reagan opened the gate to offshoring; he gave capital mobility to scour the planet for cheaper labor. He won the war against expensive American labor. He allowed the American upper class to bypass the pricey middle class wages that come with a first world nation. Having undermined middle class wages and benefits, this made it necessary to financialize the economy so we could finance middle class consumption through fiat money - credit cards and sub primes. [We had to replace high wages with something - so we leant the middle class the money they used to make in wages. The profits gained by lowering labor costs were turned into high interest loans. Hard working families had to go deeper and deeper into debt just to stay afloat.] This lasted 30 years until the banking system blew up. Now the game is over. Unemployment is hear to stay because the wealthy have effectively outsourced all the jobs.

Walmart's greatest partner is China, NOT the American middle class.

Walmart invests heavily in the Republican Party so that is can get all its manufacturing done in China.

Meaning: the Republican Party is the most anti-patriotic political party in American history, but they have their base anesthetized by talk radio which re-describes their outsourcing as freedom.

Word to the wise. Invest in prisons. Free nations that unwind their middle classes always end up putting the superfluous in cages - or worse.

America has the wealthiest private sector in history. It can afford to give a decent standard of living to hard working American families, like it did during the postwar years. Instead, we are seeing the non-wealthy cast drift by people who received massive tax cuts and then shipped all the job overseas. American families have been sold out by companies like Bain capital, who help rich investors benefit from the exploited labor of freedom-hating sweat-shop nations.

Fucking morons. The Reagan Revolution was merely a large offshoring project. They got rid of high paying middle class jobs, and they tried to make up for it by expanding the credit system. Then everything predictably blew up. We are living in the aftermath.

If the Republican primaries are any indication, one big debate in the upcoming election will be whether President Obama is pushing the country toward a European-style welfare culture.

---

"Once we thought 'entitlement' meant that Americans were entitled to the privilege of trying to succeed in the greatest country in the world," Romney said in a recent speech. "But today the new entitlement battle is over the size of the check you get from Washington."

When we have 15 million out of work and another 10 million earning minimum or just above minimum wage, what do you expect, that less people would be on food stamps? Earning minimum wage puts a person at poverty level. If they have kids, they are way below poverty level. We probably should drop the minimum wage so the wealthy can create a few more $5 per hour jobs.

This was more than a business cycle, it was the SECOND Pub cronyism and corruption World Depression. Fraud and scams like this are a crime. Pubs are always presiding over these bubbles.

It is better to be thought a fool then make a statement like you did and PROVE IT!

Some people show why they are ignorant without trying!

Some people stop reading because the words are too big!

Not everyone is foolish enough to show their mind is closed!

Where is your vaunted tolerance?

The only thing people like you can take pride in is your ignorance!

Perhaps you should ask the two people who voted YES on the poll which programs they'd like to continue.

Well, like I said

Which cradle to grave program do you want to end?

If the poll had asked do you want to end public schools, college tuition loans, unemployment insurance or Social Security you would get a different response.

Those who voted No, are you willing to give up all those programs so that you can survive totally on your own without the evil government?

I'm good with ending Federal control of public schools, federal control of tuition loans that does nothing but jack up the cost of tuition, unemployment insurance just makes people less likely to save 'for a rainy day' and even at 54 years old I'll never get a dime of the money I've paid into Social Security.

So yeah, I'm game...
