Water buffalo incident - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The water buffalo incident was a controversy at the University of Pennsylvania in 1993, in which student Eden Jacobowitz was charged with violating the university's racial harassment policy.
The incident occurred when Jacobowitz shouted, "Shut up, you water buffalo," out his window to a crowd of mostly black Delta Sigma Theta sorority sisters creating a ruckus outside his dorm. Others had shouted at the crowd, including several who shouted racial epithets, but Jacobowitz was the only one charged.

Jacobowitz's initial advisor was assigned to him by the University and urged him to accept its offer of a settlement. The settlement required him to admit to violating the racial harassment policy. He refused and retained another advisor, history professor Alan Charles Kors.

Jacobowitz explained his choice of "water buffalo" as from Hebrew slang, "Behema," used by Jews to refer to a loud, rowdy person. He procured several expert witnesses who attested to this and others, such as Michael Meyers, who gave testimonies that "water buffalo" was not a racial epithet against African Americans.

Jacobowitz's story was brought to the fore by the media focus on Penn and on April 23, several days before his hearing, the New York-based Jewish Daily Forward broke his story with the headline "Pennsylvania Preparing to Buffalo a Yeshiva Boy" The story gained even wider media coverage after the Wall Street Journal picked up the story with an editorial entitled "Buffaloed at Penn." Jacobowitz was interviewed on television several times.

Based on testimony that Jacobowitz had called the women "water buffalo" and the university's belief that this was a racial epithet, they proceeded with prosecuting him.

black-hole is racist

Commissioner Kenneth Mayfield, who is white, said it seemed that central collections “has become a black hole” because paperwork reportedly has become lost in the office. .

Commissioner John Wiley Price, who is black, interrupted him with a loud “Excuse me!” He then corrected his colleague, saying the office has become a “white hole.” That prompted Judge Thomas Jones, who is black, to demand an apology from Mayfield for his racially insensitive analogy.

I cannot believe that Judge Thomas asked the commissioner for an apology. What is going on in this country? We have people singing alternate national anthems and now common scientific terms are racist. Jesse Jackson is even mad at Senator Obama because he’s apparently “not black enough“. People who see everything through the prism of race have a disease.

You didn't indicate which of those people got fired.

You didn't indicate which of those people got fired.

The article on Buchanan's situation shows that he got fired.

Also when you get a ltter of reprimand or censure in most jobs that is the first step to throwing a person out and a signal they should start looking for new work or else drastically and completely change their behavior in some respect, and in such cases the persons job is effectively threatened.

In addition to Buchanan, you have Glen Beck, and Janice Danieals:
Nobody Ever Got Fired For Being Politically Correct - Part 2 - Auburn Journal

"Today, we learned that Mayor Janice Daniels of Troy Michigan, who told the world on her Facebook page last week that she couldn’t be a fan of New York now that “queers can marry there,” has lost her job with Century 21 Real Estate. For the record, Daniels has publicly apologized for her mean-spirited, **homophobic** comment. But apparently, not all the damage her comment inflicted on her good name and reputation can be repaired with an apology. Her boss at Century 21 indicated that he can have, “no one in his company, either employee or independent contractor, who would be capable of such insensitivity to the LGBT community, or to anyone for that matter.”

We have Anthony Federico who got fired over the JEremy line remark:
Report: Fired ESPN Employee 'Devastated' By Uproar Over Offensive Jeremy Lin Headline « CBS New York

Brian GLover got fired for thinking verbotten thoughts:
Tennessee Teacher Fired Over Writing Politically Incorrect, "Racist" Song | Danny Davids

Hank Williams Jr lost his gig on Monday Night Football for being not PC enough and actually criticizing Obama golfing with Boener and comparing that to Hitler and Netenyahoo:
ESPN fires Hank, who claims he quit | ProFootballTalk

Then there was the 'nappy headed hoes' remark by Imus that cost him his job despite his groveling and publically begging to keep it.
Imus called women's basketball team "nappy-headed hos" | Media Matters for America

Jesus Christ, how many examples do you need?

But of course this is just a charade. You really could not care less about 'thought police' or anything else that threatens free thought and expression in this country or else you would not have so much difficulty making this observation all on your own. You just want to waste my time, but thats OK. When it comes to reminding everyone what PC assholes we have running society these days, I am more than happy to do so ocasionally.

So you are saying that people are held accountable for making blatantly racist or otherwise outrageous comments when they are representing their employer and can be expected to adversely affect the business? What a shock. Would you prefer that some union be called in to protect failed employees showing such poor judgment? A private company doesn't have the right to make personnel decisions in the best interests of said company? Do you work for the ACLU?

RACE is not America's biggest problem..

CLASS is really where the rubber meets the road.

the Thought Police are worse. adults remember how different it was 50 years ago and the reasons for political correctness and the inevitable swing too far. kids are forced to believe (or at least speak) certain inaccuracies that are not supported by evidence. the one Big Lie is not where the problem lies exactly. it is all the little lies and all the evidence that needs to be ignored that causes a disconnect from logically examining the world around you. noticing certain things makes you a thought criminal and many people just stop thinking rather than get into trouble.

So you are saying that people are held accountable for making blatantly racist or otherwise outrageous comments when they are representing their employer and can be expected to adversely affect the business? What a shock.

The only reason it adversely affects business is because of all the Thought Police that send in emails, letters, and make public protests about silly harmless statements. The businesses are just being cowards and cutting the employees instead of telling the pressure groups to kiss off like they should do.

Would you prefer that some union be called in to protect failed employees showing such poor judgment?

The employees were not necesarily showing poor judgement at all. Prior to the Imus incident no one had ever publicaly complained about the phrase 'nappy headed ho' being racist and was a phrase I had heard from people prior to that with no one busting a vein over it. Imus has been unpopular with these PC fascists and so the first chance they had to nail him they did, by inventing a an entirely new outrage that had never been objected to before and then running him out of his job by harrassing his employer until they finally fired him. The same thing happened with Wiliams Jr when he compared Boener and Obama to Hitler and Netenyahoo. Why was Williams statement so outrageous that he had to be fired for what he said? And the same thing happened to the guy who used the word niggardly when it isnt even a racial slur at all.

And all that makes sense to you? That is the right to free speech?

Free speech is not just a legal right, it has until recently also been a social and cultural right also. But not now, not with these intolerant fascist running around hounding one person after another out of their jobs and ruining their careers.

Are you *really* OK with this kind of thing?

A private company doesn't have the right to make personnel decisions in the best interests of said company?

Of course they do. They have the right to make bad diecisions, they have the right to tuck tail and run for fear of losing profits, they have the right to be completely spineless aggregates of slime and shit if they want to.

Do you work for the ACLU?

Only in my nightmares.

Seriously, the ACLU apporves of this sort of thing. They just dont want it institutionalized into a legal criminal process. They have nothing to say about administrative law or public silence compaigns like what happened to Imus, Williams and Buchanan.

REAL racism, the kind that says another race or races are inferior and not worthy of legal protection, that is EVIL. Death camps are evil. Legally imposed segregation is evil.

Telling a stupid joke based on ethnicity is NOT evil and should not be punished by law or by being fired.

Free speech is either tolerated or it is not and the real test of how much freedom we have is proven by what extremes can express themselves. I dont agree witht he communists, but they must have the legal right to speak freely and the same goes for the KKK, the ACLU, the SPLC, Islamacists, polygamists, drug legalization efforts, etc, though I disagree substantiall with all of them and categorically with most of them.

Do you really want to contract the range of free expression in this country by use of public silencing campaigns and harrassment?

So now "thought police" = people with opinions?

You don't expect businesses to respond to what their customers want? Is that how business works, genius?

In your opinion? Is that what this comes down to? Your opinion? You just insist that everyone agree with your opinion? Talk about thought police...

Tell you what, when you own a TV or radio station you can make your opinion the guiding standard for what is or is not said by those representing your company. You can even go proudly bankrupt as your customers abandon you if one of your employees says something stupid and you feel that being stubborn is more important than listening to your customers (viewers, advertisers, etc). Good for you. Get on it.

Free speech has never meant being immune from accountability for your decisions. You sound like a whiny little bitch who doesn't understand the concept at all.

No one is criminally punished in the US for telling a racist joke. Don't try to lump "being fired" in with criminal prosecution. It's dishonest.

You can stand on the street corner repeating racist epithets over and over all day and night like some bigoted Rain Man if you want and you won't be prosecuted for it. You know this, you dishonest fuck. You can sit in your local bar telling N***** jokes all you want until the owner tells you to shut the fuck up or get the fuck out of his place because you are bad for business. Then you can go home and continue the 'hilarity' with any racist friends you can find if that's what gets you off.

Freedom of Speech is not and never has been freedom from responsibility. Grow the fuck up a little.
