The CONCEPT of regrigeration existed for a long time, but MODERN refriferators and air conditioners were originally designed for battelships and submarines. After WWII they were made available to the home market. Before that time they were enormous and expensive and dangerous. So it was government demand to create a better environment for our troops that gave us the refrigerators and air conditioners we enjoy today.

Hands down Rush Limbaugh............how could you not be amazed by the ease in which he trivializes the effectiveness of liberal public policy!!!

ANd talking about amazing.............he predicted way back in February that Obama would quickly tank in the polls. Even I was skeptical............but as usual, the man is the omnipotent.

As he said when asked recently about his prediction of Obama's approval #'s falling like a stone in water................

And yes the right is anti science. They cut off government funding to science that goes to the greater good because they think the private sector will fund it if its profitable or a good idea. Here is the problem Allieblabla. Many of the greatest inventions today came from government programs. Government funded experiments. Those scientists ideas showed promise, like solar or battery power, but weren't practical enough for private investors, IE the stock market. So if it weren't for government, we wouldn't have things like, oh, the internet.
Good to know you're still nuttier than a fruitcake.

After the internet -which was considered an utter and complete failure until someone found a way to turn an evil profit off of it- you'd be hard pressed to come up with a list of unarguable successes of these nondescript "great inventions" discovered by gubmint experiments.

There are lots of them. Thats why government gives grants to scientists so they can do research.

You should listen to Thom Hartmann. He explained this the other day and mentioned several examples. I wish I could remember some, but regardless, you get the point.

There are scientists out there working on ideas that have great potential, but not immediately profitable. So if the government didn't invest, no one would and we would not be as advanced as we are on things like stem cell.

This is why its bad when the GOP are in charge and they cut off funding for things they don't think are important. They may not be now, but they will/might.

Aww, come on Dude. I'll agree that the gubmint screws up most of what they touch, but many of the things we take for granted today were a direct result of Kennedy's challenge to go to the moon within 10 years. The gubmint's space program generated innovation, inventions and technologies that had once been considered science fiction or hadn't even been thought of at all.

And I guarantee that conservatives complained that all those government funded projects that turned into something great were all a waste of money at the time.

And we probably would agree if we aren't told about their potential. If you told me about the internet before it came out, I'd probably say, "what for". Now look.

Republicans know a lot about wasting government money, on their own special interest projects. I bet most of their ideas turned out to be a waste and I bet things like the internet came from left leaning science.

I have taken a short sabbatical on these talk shows for the last few weeks. As the poll indicates, most of these people are out to increase their ratings, but they do sprinkle topics that has a small percentage of 'meat' content.

Is it me or does anyone else think that these talk show people, all of them on TV/Radio are more concerned about having their millions and millions in salaries "Redistributed" under Obama's, "America of Change"? Or, are they really concerned about America sliding deeper into a socialist/Marxist state? I am beginning to think they are more concerned that their incomes being tapped than about America sliding deeper into socialism.

Flash!! and Breaking News! to those talking heads....
The United States of America is, and has been, quite socialist as most already know in here. Any one of us could post a ton of 'socialist' programs in effect that already help and assist others, but then 99% of the posters in USMB are quite informed, and already are aware how many programs are already active. We cannot slide any deeper IMHO cuz we can't friggen afford it. And we don't want anything to do with Marxist rule either, like this entire administration seems to be pushing us into, Pelosi included.
As a newbie in here I try reading more than posting, so far, but I do enjoy this group a lot.

Jason Lewis. Particularly because he isn't a twit.

The Jason Lewis Show

What a twit

From his site,

"I would hope the show appeals to the real silent majority. Right now, the two major political parties are essentially playing between the forty yardlines. Democrats are socialists and Republicans are afraid to really defend capitalism on such things as energy, education, and health care. And both parties seem to be charter members of the big government nanny state, whether it's no-smoking bans, a failed war on drugs, or a creeping environmental dogma that routinely tramples property rights. <SPAN class=style2>

Actually, the internet has its basis in military and academic applications long before it became profittable.

It aided research, shorten communications times, and allow for diverse planning and organization of disperate groups . It was never a failure--it was a success long before profits entered the picture.

Sorry dude. But the picture you are painting of the internet is not reality. Unless, making a profit is the only measurement of success.
It was still a money pit....But let's take the claim at face value anyways.

Start naming some of the other unqualified successes of big gubmint R&D that doesn't involve dropping bombs and slinging bullets.

Nasa
Osha
EPA
Social Security
NSF
--uhmmm, how many do you want? Of course, I am naming things that did not net money but benefit the nation or society...

I guess that I have a high standard for radio talk-show hosts. I find several of them to be hypocrites, people who have a double standard, and people lacking in personal character and integrity.

Limbaugh preached personal responsibility. He also criticized drug abusers. Yet, he paid $30,000 to defray the cost of an investigation and completed an 18-month therapy regimen with his physician in light of a charge having to do with doctor shopping. Oh. He also asked for divorce and also accepted unemployment compensation.

Hannity offered to be water-boarded for charity. Keith Olbermann offered $1,000 to the families of U.S. troops for every second Hannity withstood the technique. To my knoledge, Hannity has yet to even acknowledge the offer or proceed with being water boarded.

Michael Savage parades himself as a defender of freedom of speech. Yet, he filed lawsuits against those who had crated websites that criticized things that he had said. Savage also asked for donations for a lawsuit against CAIR. He promised to fight CAIR to the bitter end and take the issue to the Supreme Court if necessary. He ultimately chickened out when it was time for him to lay his cards on the table.

Though I have not researched them, I’m confident that the other talk-show hosts have plenty of blemishes on their record of integrity too.
