I have to make a decision between two courses that I want to take, but I can't decide which to choose. The choice is between the following:

The State of Israel from 1948-2002
http://history.fas.nyu.edu/docs/IO/2752/Zalashik0523.pdf

OR

The Holocaust: The Third Reich and the Jews
http://history.fas.nyu.edu/docs/IO/2752/JockuschV57.0808.pdf

If anyone cares to take a look, I posted the links to the preliminary syllabus for each course...if that's too much work, a suggestion just based on the names of the courses would be great.

Any advice with some sort of reason behind it would be greatly appreciated.

It depends on what you want, both sound fascinating to me. My tendency under normal circumstances would be the Holocaust. However, with us living in 'interesting times' I guess I'd go with Israel-hoping the teacher would be 'fair'.

What’s your major? Are both equal credit? Would either be of more benefit?

Both are equal credit and both fulfill the second requirement for a non-western course for the history major.

How do they figure 'non-Western'? Oh well, I have to go with Jeff's the history of Israel is very topical right now. I really would try to vet the prof first though.

I don't know how they get non-western with the Holocaust course either; maybe because of the mass immigration it induced that led to the establishment of Israel.

The problem with the Holocaust course is that the professor who created the course and taught it the last few years isn't teaching it this semester and his TA is teaching it by herself which is why they made it a really small class instead of a bigger lecture. I really wanted to take the other guy because I've heard incredible things about him. And for the Israel course, the professor is not listed on "ratemyprofessor.com" or on the course evaluation guide for my school. So I know absolutely nothing about both of these people.

I would assume the Israel professor will be fair (if not pro-Jewish) because the course is crosslisted as a history course but is actually sponsored by the Department of Hebrew and Judaic Studies.

If that's the case, go with the one that helps you in the here and now. Holocaust and Third Reich are interesting enough to study on your own.

Personally? I'd definitely go with the history of Israel class, because it's something I know a lot less about. You can turn on the history channel anytime and hear about the holocaust, and you've no doubt learned a good bit already in previous history classes. The history of Israel is...complicated, as far as I can see. It's like "oh, well no one ever mentions that the jews bought their land fair and square" but then "yes, but you left out the part where..." back and forth.

Thanks...that's a really good point. I actually went with the Israel class. The overriding factor was that if I took the Holocaust one I would have had five classes on Tuesday and I just can't handle that.

Wait until you hit the real world. But, I think you made the right choice, if for the wrong reason. ;)
