The program is called Lifeline, established in 1984, originally created to subsidize landline phone service for low income Americans, funded by government-collected telecommunication fees, paid by consumers.

In 2008, the program was expanded to support cell phones which quickly escalated the cost of the program. In 2008 the program cost $772 million, but by 2011 it cost $1.6 billion.

The program has also been highlighted for reform by Senator Claire McCaskill D-Mo.

Where do

Then you must really hate the GOP with a passion. They bankroll the snot out of their corporate cronies with our tax dollars that make the bush phone look like amateur hour.

And now you are attacking some old men and women because they get a $6 discount on their land phones? Your mom and pops. OMGJFC

With the fastest growing segment of the population being the elderly, many people are struggling to care for aging family members. Philips® Lifeline® is a 24/7 communication service designed to provide assistance to seniors with the press of a button, allowing them to remain in their homes as long as possible, extending independence and autonomy through the golden years. Lifeline® can also provide peace of mind to family members who worry that a mother, father, sister or brother might not get help when it matters most.

If you mama needs one, here is the address.
Lifeline Phone Bill Assistance - Safelink Wireless

And it is not free, mom and pop have paid into the system and they deserve to be protected.

Free speech is not free either. Four americans just paid for it with their lives.

Just on an unrelated side note. 690 people thanked you and you never thanked one person.

Sort of indicates on a small scale what a miserable, self-serving, ungrateful bastard you are.

Carry on....

Where do USMB Libs send their phone bill when they need to be paid, is it to the White House or local Democrat Party?

here are the modernity rules passed in 2011 and 2012 to also include broadband, voip type services, etc.
https://www.federalregister.gov/art...eveloping-a-unified-intercarrier-compensation
https://www.federalregister.gov/art...l-state-joint-board-on-universal-service#h-34
Cell service was included in Nov, 2008. And the government does subsidize the program to the tune of -
Carriers can receive up to $10 a month in government subsidies, sufficient to cover what amounts to about $3 in service, Mr. Entner said.
(from the New York Times, Published: June 14, 2009)

Now, remember these carriers also receive the funds from the universal service fees we pay for with our services that - we pay for! So they get a government subsidy as well as get to split the fees fund between them, depending on the number of customers they actually have sign up with them for Lifeline. And don't forget the broadband service, etc.

Let's see, now that was when all of Congress was Dem controlled. Hmmmm.

and we subsidize it with our taxes and through our own phone, cable, broadband bills, etc.
Double hit there.

Please understand, I was all for supporting a landline giving access to emergency services for those truly in need. I also understand the lack of pay phones out there and the need to include cell phones. However, they are now provided with more than just emergency service access. Each of these phones now include 68 minutes monthly. They are now including, broadband, internet access, etc. Where does it stop?

That's why my parents have cell phones, that I pay for. Not sure why people don't care enough about their family members that they can't bite the bullet and pay $10 a line.
