Latino groups split over Democrat map plan

A coalition of Latino groups that had worked together for more representation in the state legislature fragmented today at a state Senate hearing over the effects of a proposed Democratic redrawing of Illinois’ legislative boundaries.

The hearing was the first of two rare weekend legislative meetings in Chicago over the plan by ruling Democrats in Springfield to redraw the 59 state Senate and 118 state House districts. Another hearing is scheduled for Sunday by the House remap panel. The map aims at keeping Democrats in control over Republicans for the next decade, while trying to meet federal and state requirements to ensure proper representation for minorities.

Republicans at the hearing questioned some witnesses in an apparent effort to try to create a legal record, since a lawsuit may be their only way to challenge the map lines. Democrats control the legislature and the governor’s office, meaning no GOP input was needed to draw the map.

Juan Rangel, CEO of the United Neighborhood Organization and head of the Latino Coalition for Fair Redistricting, voiced support for proposed map lines that create an additional Latino majority Senate district on Chicago’s Southwest Side.

Rangel credited Democrats who control the Senate with how they were able to “strike a balance with other minority groups, particularly African Americans” who lost population in Chicago while the Latino population grew in the city and suburbs.

What special groups are allowed to look after white America, like there are groups for black Americans, or Latino "not really" Americans.

At what point does "white" get the advantages of being a minority. When they are less in number to other races in a town, a county, a state? What?

At the point that it's wealthy enough to do so.

That means for most of us, never.

And for a select few of us, pretty much until kingdom come

Exactly...It has less to do with race and more to do with money and power.

I'm not entirely convinced that money ALONE will protect most of us.

AFter all, this latest SWINDLE took down one hell of a lot of rich people, didn't it?

I don't see the grand narrative as the RICH V the POOR or workers, I see it more as INSIDERS v the world.

Follow the money (if you can, usually that's hard to do) and you see who those INSIDERS (and their servants) really are.

Most Republicans in leadership positions fight for the rich. It just happens the majority of the rich are white. When Republicans want to throw grandma off a cliff, it's no coincidence grandma is white. Republican leadership don't like poor whites or middle class whites any more than they like poor blacks or middle class Hispanics. It's just that poor whites and middle class white haven't figured that out yet. Paul Ryan is "teaching" them.

So what you are all saying is that poor whites simply don't have anyone looking after them in the way, LA RAZA and all it's satellite groups do for the invading Latin Americans.

Wrong again this has EVERYTHING to do with power. See the Chicago Gangsters Democrats want to stay in power. They know the White population fragment into voting between R and D. But the Latinos with Luiz Guterriz, a traitor and a Brown KKK US House Member, keep the Latinos voting D. The Blacks vote D, even if Jim Crow himself came back and ran on the D side! They have certainity where the Blacks and Latinos will vote, therefore, they manipulate the map in such a corrupt way to make sure there they will win.

See Luis Gutierrez's 4th district. It's the most oddly shaped district in the US! It was featured in the economist to show how Chicago Gangster politics rigs the election to keep out a R and keep in the worst Congressman from either House!

But the champion gerrymandering comes from Illinois. Chicago has two Hispanic areas. They are in different parts of the city, but that has not discouraged the good politicians of Illinois from creating a constituency consisting of these two areas only. They lie on either side of a black part of the city like the bread of a sandwich. Worst of all is the state's extraordinary 17th District, which is a crab (see chart). Though most of it lies in the western part of the state, two claws stretch out towards the eastern part to grab Democratic cities in order to make the surrounding 18th and 19th districts more reliably Republican.

The district covers two strips running east-west across the city of Chicago, Illinois on the west side continuing into smaller portion of some suburban areas in Cook County, surrounding Illinois' 7th congressional district. The northern portion is largely Puerto Rican, while the southern portion is heavily Mexican. The two sections are on opposite sides of the city and are only connected by a piece of Interstate 294 to the west; the highway is in the district while the surrounding areas are not. It is the smallest congressional district in area outside of New York City and San Francisco.

Is someone stopping you from setting up an advocacy group for white people?

How do you think that would fly?
I've no idea. But it would be perfectly legal. Not my problem that someone's fears keep them from doing what they want.

You know exactly what would happen...and you'd be among those screeching about the racists.
Doubtful.

I'm sure at one time other minorities were afraid to start advocacy groups but they got past their fears and did it anyway.

It is sad to see that white people are not brave.

:(

Do you really think you're fooling anyone? Because...you're not.

LOL, you're not that naive are you? Take NAACP and NAAWP, which one is listed as a hate group. La Raza, Black Panthers, Nation of Islam and the KKK? Congressional Black Caucus, Latino Caucus and White Caucus, which would be labeled racist?

If a latino or black group pops up, even one's like La Raza that are racist, its cool. But a white groups gets labeled racist right off the bat and get blackballed immediately!
