How does a thread become listed as "old" when it's only been up less than a half hour?

Why is this determination even made if the thread never does disappear anyway?

It's a system default. Only the Wizard knows these things. Probably only the Wizard and you care.

It becomes "old" as soon as you read it. The board "knows" what you have read and looked at already, and it's letting you know.

I reckon a thread gets old the moment certain posters enter it :D

It depends on who posts it. If it's an Obama supporter, it becomes Old real quick.

It becomes old when del comes along, dressed in lederhosen and sprinkles pixie dust on it.

My guess is the second you click on it, it becomes "old" to you...but not necessarily to everyone else until they click on it

I am more interested in what makes a thread "hot".

It appears to be based on number of views, not replies. Here's one from 2003 that never got a reply.
