I bet there are "Religous" groups (Note the quotes) up in arms over this...but why the HELL are women who are nursing their babies EVER questioned? Can anyone offer VALID reasons why anyone should be offended at a mother nursing her baby? So what if a little nipple shows for an instant - or the blanket/towel covering the baby drops. Don't DARE use 'what if the children see it?' as an excuse cuz I'll call you stupid. :) Kids will have NO issues or frustration about seeing such behaviour. The Puritian-Right tends to believe that Nudity of THREE parts of the body is wrong - yet every other part is somehow 'santified'. Nobody makes a fat man wear a bra/shirt when it's hot outside, yet a flat-chested WOMAN would be ticketed.

blah...

Look - Women have boobs. The boobs are made so they can feed offspring. If women didn't have them, Men would. Why are we letting this be a big deal??

I think just like smoking, private property rules about breast feeding should be dictated by the owner. And I think breast feeding women could use a lick of common sense and not do it where it's apt to offend someone...say in the center of a restaurant. There is such a thing as decorum- there's no need to breast feed everywhere since there are numerous places to do so which won't be offensive to more modest people.

That whole natural argument just doesn't sway me...brushing your teeth is natural too but I don't particularly want to see my grandmother whipping out her dentures for a little TLC in the middle of victoria's secret.

I had 4 children and I breast fed everyone of them. I breast fed in restaurants, store's, doctor's office, where ever I happen to be, if my baby was hungry he got fed on the spot. It is something that can be done discreetly with practice I couldn't tell you how many times I would be nursing and someone would walk up to look at the baby not realizing that I was nursing, until I said uh can you wait a minute. I do not agree with anyone who thinks a mother should go to the bathroom to feed her baby would you take your plate of food and eat in a public restroom probably not! Breast feeding is the most natural thing in the world it is the best milk you could give your baby.

Sorry Moi I have to disagree with you on the brushing your teeth thing.
women are born with breasts specifically designed for nursing their young like any other mammal. However we are not born with toothbrushes attached to our body for brushing our teeth that was created by man. Like formula.

But you did it discreetly....just like I think people should. I breast fed my son too. I just didn't do it with my breast flapping about for all to see. There is a time and a place for everything. I also don't eat on a train or in a doctor's waiting room or as I'm walking through a store... because not everyone wants to smell my food, hear my chewing, etc. It's called common decency...which isn't all that common anymore.

And I used the teeth example because I think it's a bit gross to use the bathroom example that most people generally use....yuck!

I AGREE!!!!

Ask Janet Jackson...1/2 second of exposure cost her spot performing at the Grammy Awards, and there are still lawsuits pending against her, CBS, and the NFL for "traumatizing children". Come on, give me a flipping break. I have a sister who breast fed as well as some friends who are still breast feeding their babies. They have done it with me sitting at a table in a restaurant with them. My friends simply carry a blanket which they place loosely over the baby and the breast while the baby eats. Trust me, I've seen many more offensive things in restaurants than babies being breast fed. And how many of you would rather have woman discreetly feed her kid than listen to the kid cry because he/she is hungry?

Because Americans, in general, have this puritanical, repressive view of human sexuality. And most men are stuck at emotional age of adolescents getting excited over the women's lingerie section of the Spiegel catalog

Why are other people so hung up about being called "Oriental", "Black", "Indian" instead of "Asian", "African American" and "Native American"? After all it's just skin color, so what does it matter? Oh, that's right, there is history behind all of that, like racism, slavery and so on.

Oh, and since people are so hung up about sexuality, how about that sexual harrassment crap? You'd think women in the workplace would lighten up a little and laugh at a filthy joke or even not mind an occassional picture or screensaver of naked women in suggestive poses (or just plain ol' porn) on a co-worker's desk or computer. They should consider it a compliment if a man swatted them on the butt. I guess those women are being puritanical and sexually repressed, too. Oh, that's right, there is a history behind that as well.

Has it ever occurred to you that people are offended because there are historical reasons for it. We may not remember what the reasons were, but there obvious is a value in our culture that makes public nudity something shameful. You can call it "repression", "puritanical" or whatever you want, the point is that many people are offended by it and that there is an appropriate time and a place for certain things. And society and most people aren't going to change their feelings about it just because you want them to.

My wife is Korean and she HATES it when people say that it is racist to call sombody Oriental. Hell, I do business with a company in Korea named, Oriental Electronics. Asians accept they are Oriental. It is only the left that is making an issue of this. The left and Americans of Asian descent that have no idea what Oriental means.

Well.....maybe we should.

I don't have a problem with discrete breast feeding, but by this logic I should be able to relieve myself in public.

If a restaurant, or any other privately owned establishment, doesn't want women exposing themselves they have every right to kick them out. It's their property.

Ever heard of: "No shoes, no shirt, no service."? Same thing. These people don't like Starbucks' policies they have the right not to buy coffee from them.

shouldn't have to be discreet...why are we, as a society, so afraid of breasts?
I don't know anyone who's afraid of a breast but I do know a lot of people that prefer not to dine with them for the same reasons that we wear clothes and don't eat with a penis hanging out on the table. It's called manners.

Going to a private establishment should not require the patron to consent to viewing one. If the person owning the establishment chooses to make policy that being discreet is the way to go, neither the government nor breastfeeding women nor penis waving men should have the authority to override them.

It is the religious right that keeps nudity at bay. I, as part of the religious right, do not want to see any woman's boobs in public. It's part of a set of moral values. That is why it is becoming a big deal - people are trying to break that set of values. Personally, I don't want to see women going to a public restroom to breastfeed their babies - let them do it wherever it is permitted. However, they can very simply cover themselves up. There is no need to just flip out the breast and start feeding...especially in a restaurant. Hell, if there is nothing to stop women from breastfeeding uncovered in public, then what is going to stop a person like me from walking over to the curb and pissing in the street? There are most likely plenty of people that wouldn't mind, but as I stated earlier, it is the set of moral values that prohibits it.

As to the statement, "The Puritian-Right tends to believe that Nudity of THREE parts of the body is wrong - yet every other part is somehow 'santified', I personally disagree. Not only do I not want to see bare breasts when I go out in public, but I don't want to see women in underwear or very revealing clothing. Modesty goes farther (for me, atleast) than those 3 parts of the body.
