I have been involved in a couple of these ops both on the ground and financing one at the HQ level. The U.S. has been doing these things for a long time. I wouldn't consider spending money and possibly lives on something "fun" to be worthwhile or admirable. As for training, in the days before we were embroiled in 2+ wars that was some kind of argument. Today it falls flat.

I don't think our troops should be used for any purpose other than defense of our homeland. But sending them to Africa to put a stop to the mass raping and other atrocities going on there seems more acceptable than our actions in Vietnam and Iraq, all of which has severely damaged our national reputation.

There is a valid humanitarian purpose in this action.
