What's the plan for Rational Republicans?

Fuck you, eat shit, and die.
Thanks for playing.

Great response! You're only proving the point of the OP.

The "point" of the OP was to look for Republicans who will think like Olympia Snowe. Those people don't win national elections. When I pointed out how the GOP won national elections the response was immediately to denigrate those achievements and pretend they didnt exist.
So the government did get smaller in '94? What "achievements" are you talking about, that I supposedly denigrated?
There is no arguing with someone like that.
You mean someone like me? Cause your ridiculous comment was a response to my post...
And because you can't refute what I said, you resort to rude personal attacks. This says nothing about me, and everything about you.
And your sig line comes from Rep Steve Cohen of Memphis. You might want to credit him. If someone said it earlier than him I dont know.

The "Jesus was a community organizer..." line? I saw it on a bumper sticker. The other quote is John Adams.

You ought to try listenng to Sarah Palin and Rush Limbaugh instead of forming your opinions based on what CNN says.

The path to victory is the same as it was in 1980, 1984, and 1994: small limited government, lower and simplified taxes, vigorous foreign policy. If they get back on that message they will win elections.
But if the GOP sounds only marginally competent they will still beat the tar out of the Democrats, who have welched on every promise they made in the last 2 years.

Cause the government sure get smaller in 1980, 1984, and 1994, right?

Of course not. The government has NEVER gotten smaller. It has only ever gotten bigger.

So if the GOP ran on smaller government in 80, 84, and 94 - aren't they the ones who've welched on every promise they made in the last 30 years?

if that was indeed their platform and if indeed govt got bigger then yes.....

my question to the left is.....why are things not geeting better for the left's voting base.....the poor are still poor.....the uninsured are still uninsured...the homeless are still homeless and the evil rich republicans and big business keep getting richer....not to mention we are still at war and about to send another 40,000 soliders to a nation where a superpower has never won a war.....and last but not least...the dollar is about to become a third world currency....

Yeah, it happened.

There will always be poor people - but the idea of a lot of the so-called "entitlements" is that we should do what we can to make things easier for people who need help, rather than more tax cuts for the rich
.....the uninsured are still uninsured...
We're working on that, no matter how hard the far left is fighting it..
the homeless are still homeless and the evil rich republicans and big business keep getting richer....not to mention we are still at war and about to send another 40,000 soliders to a nation where a superpower has never won a war.....and last but not least...the dollar is about to become a third world currency....

I don't know who would think that all of the worlds problems would be solved by Obama in his first 9 months. I think he's made good headway - there's a long way to go, and it'll take a while.

The GOP has won every presidential election since WW2 except for 6. The Democrats have had one president get re-elected in that same time.

Winning the Presidency is an achievement?

I'm interested in hearing from some of the rational conservatives here. It's no secret that I hang to the left, but I also believe that competition is good. And as long as the Sarah Palin, Glenn Beck, Rush Limbaugh, anti-intellectual, irrationalist, and/or theocractic fringe are the movers and shakers of the Republican party, I can't see them as a viable alternative to the Democratic party.

So my question is to the more rational conservatives who I recognize are present here and in the general public. The conservatives who are not anti-evolution, obsessed with abortion, spouting over-the-top conspiracy theories, and who can debate on the merits of an idea rather than make-up patently false assertions are my target.

What comes next for you and the Republican party? Do you have any ideas how to regain control? Do you think the GOP should be conceded and another party become home for rational conservatives? What if the Democratic party officially split into Conservative Democrats and Liberal Democrats? (which seems possible these days). Would any of you consider joining a separate Conservative Democrat Party? Should you try to make the Libertarian party a viable national party?

I'm asking with sincerity. I consider it to my advantage if rational people control the opposition. After all, I don't like to think that if the party I generally support loses, then the country could have a Sarah Palin as president. I may frequently support the Democrat party, but I don't appreciate feeling like I have to support them because the alternative is so out of touch.

I don't think you have any idea whatsoever as to the nature of politics, economies, or our two party system. You think Limbaugh is an extreme right-winger? He's pretty much just a plain old Republican. Extreme right wingers would espouse such beliefs as ending government licensing of professionals such as doctors, lawyers, nurses, doing away with almost all government programs, most taxes, things like that. Ron Paul is about the only extreme right winger in the Congress and he was a Libertarian at one point. The Republican party is anything but extreme.

The Democrats on the other hand are about 60/40, by my guesswork. 60% are in the more extreme end of the spectrum and around 40% are like the Republicans, more towards the middle.

I consider myself conservative, but I registered independant because neither party (in my lifetime) has been anything to be too proud of. I am more conservative when it comes to government policies but not so much when it comes to religous or moral issues. I am for abortion for example. However, I do want to see as small a government as possible, one that actually works for the people of this country. So that being said, I would have to consider myself a rational conservative.

Now as far as what the Republican Party has to do to win the next election; they need to think about everything that went wrong with the last. First of all they were up against a political Juggernaut. The Dems broke out the big guns with a black, liberal nominee. For the sake of history, people who had never paid attention to politics ever before went out and registered and voted for the first black president. The people who wanted an end to the war voted for him. Democrats voted for him obviously. Then the people who can't stand the thought of a woman in government voted for him by default. He was a power bomb to the GOP. The Republicans never had a chance.

For the next election, it is going to be a little easier for them (GOP) to win I think. However, they will have their work cut out for them. They need to win over the faith of the American people. Make them believe that they really believe and are willing to fight for what they have always stood for. Have solid ways to create a smaller government. Have solid ways to fix the broken economy. Listen to the people. They needed to start yesterday. All the citizens want, that oppose the current administration, is a chance to work hard and reap the beniefits of their labor. Common psycology tells us that people are more grateful of things they work for than they are of handouts. Republicans need not to cater to the rich any longer but at the same time not punish them. When and only when they do these things, will they win the election of 2012.

They did. But that wasnt the point. As you well know.

It was my point.

Right Because Democrats have to disparage every achievement Republicans make in order to validate their own failed policies. Pretty pathetic. And the reason the Dems will go back to being the minority party.

YOU were the one who brought up how the republicans would win if they ran on a platform of smaller government. I simply pointed out that the government has never gotten smaller, even after the republicans ran on that, in 80, 84, and 94.

I've said nothing about the democrats, nor am I a democrat.

One of my favorite things is how conservatives try hard to say that it was Conservatives mal who founded this country and the Nazis were liberals.

:lol::lol: Talk about pretty pathetic attempt to rewrite history.

But that's pretty well irrelevant to my point, which was the winning strategy for the GOP. Which is the subject of this thread.

Are you off of your meds? You're saying that Socialists are conservative then? And that the Founders had a revolution to impose greater governmental control in the lives of the American people?

We must be in different realities.

Well, we will see here in 2010 who the viable party is and I would bet my botton dollar on conservative candidates and I am looking forward to watching MSNBC to see the looks on the faces of those liberal nut cases when they see this country go RED from sea to shining sea.

It took Jimmy Carter one term of a LIBERAL presidency to snap middle class Americans out of their coma, look what happened after that one term, a landslide Reagan victory. The people are already waking up to the disastor of another liberal and that's Obama. Republicans don't have to do anything, sit back and watch, have fun, the democrats are doing it all for them. The dems are diggin one big deep, deep hole in which they are going to bury themselves in, the republicans are just standing around handing them the shovels. Maybe, that's what Obama meant by shovel ready projects.:lol:

OP, while I appreciate your open-mindedness, you seem like you get all of your ideas about the right-wing from MSNBC and Huffington Post. Nobody appointed Limbaugh, Sarah Palin, or any other conservative pundit as the "leader" of the GOP. The mostly liberal media did. Many of us have conservative values, but it seems the only ones liberals want to pay attention to are the ones they can either deem stupid, crazy, or dishonest, with little explanation why they are so. I hope in 2012 there's a fiscally conservative, socially center-right candidate with some executive experience to vote for. I want smaller government, lower taxes, fewer scandals, and effective foreign policy with an end game for the two wars we're in, and to bring our troops home from other nations we're occupying. All I can do is hope someone emerges with those goals. If not, I'll just have to take my chances with whoever seems like they'd come closest.

Irrelevant, except for pointing out the inherent lie in claiming to run for smaller government. Yes, the rhetoric works. But the government has NEVER gotten smaller.
