What We Know About the Spill

why must you revert to name calling etc?

are you not capable of discussing the issues?

The spill isn't as bad as you and other thought.

Sorry... I know it hurts. Find another cause to take money from others.

see there you go...did i call you any names...

you are like the class retard when he doesnt know what to say...he just goes libtard, libtard

get over yourself....this isnt about politics....this is about the lasting effects of oil in the gulf

if you think water can dissolve oil...do this..go home and fill the bath tub up...put one tablespoon of car oil in it....then lets see how fast it goes away

put your tub where your mouth is

Ya... you are right.

Do this.... spill a 12oz. coke into an olympic sized swimming pool. Let it mix around a little.

Then, a day later... drink some of the water from the pool... see if you can taste the coke.

The amount of oil leaked into the gulf is compared to a 12oz coke being spilled in an olympic sized swimming pool.

And learn some science... the oil evaporates and gets broken down by bacteria.

So... now the burden of proof is on you.... show us all the damage from the oil spill, if that is what you believe. The jobs lost are because tourists aren't going there anymore. That happened because the seriousness of the spill was overstated. The beaches there are fine. So the actual oil hasn't cost that many jobs. Fisheries are being opened daily cause there isn't any oil.

Gulf Oil Spill Will Have Long Term Effects on Marine Wildlife

Immediate damage was limited but previous oil spills, including the Exxon Valdez disaster, have proven oil creates long lasting harm in marine ecosystems.

Although the numbers of oiled seabirds in rehabilitation during the early stages of the Gulf of Mexico oil spill has been low, this does not mean the impacts of this disaster on marine wildlife will remain moderate. The effect of the Deepwater Horizon oil rig blowout on long term wildlife health can only be guessed at, but based on historic data from other spills, the marine environment will not recover for many years to come.

Impacts of the Gulf of Mexico Oil Spill on Wildlife may not be Immediately Known

In the early stages of the spill, lightly oiled seabirds were being seen. These seabirds, although affected by the oil, were still able to fly, making them much more difficult to capture. This also increased the risk that the birds were returning to nests to sit on eggs or feed young, spreading the oil into nesting areas where it will remain to chronically affect those nests.

The effects of oil spills on species such as dolphins and sea turtles are more difficult to determine. Post mortem studies of non-surviving marine wildlife will help determine whether the Gulf of Mexico Oil Spill played a part in their death. Long term studies of contaminant levels, overall health and reproductive success will be needed before the full impact of the oil on these species is understood.

Chemical Dispersants Negatively Impact Marine Wildlife

The use of dispersants will also have an effect on the health of wildlife in the area. The dispersants in question – Corexit 9500 and Corexit EC9527A – are forms of kerosene, a chemical as toxic as the oil it is intended to disperse. The treated oil sinks to the seabed where it then affects benthic species.

The dispersants also reactivate the volatile components of the oil when they break it down, exposing wildlife to these toxic chemicals a second time. Corexit 9500 has also been shown to have immediate damaging effects on the feathers of birds.

Long Term Studies Show Ongoing Environmental Impacts From Oil Spills

Dead Zone in Gulf Linked to Oil

Oxygen-starved waters that have persisted for more than a month in the Gulf of Mexico are likely due to the BP oil spill, researchers say.

An unusual low oxygen zone in Gulf of Mexico waters off the Alabama shore has persisted for more than a month, and evidence points to the ongoing Deepwater Horizon oil spill as the cause.

Oil spills can deplete oxygen in water by providing a source of food to microbes that grow on oil and consume oxygen in the process.

Researchers can't say how low oxygen levels will affect the region's ecosystem in the long term, but for now, most animals that can swim away have left the area. Plankton in the zone have died.

BP oil spill damage may have been exaggerated – Telegraph Blogs

"long-term consequences of this accident look to be far less serious than those that followed the Exxon Valdez spill"

One has to wonder what the people here that are minimizing the effect of the spill have on their mind. Or even if they truly have a mind.

What happens when bacteria eat oil? What is the process? Is there anything else involved in that process? Or do you just say, "bacteria have taken care of the oil"? For you see, for the bacteria to process the oil, they use oxygen that is in the water. When they use that oxygen, other sea life that requires the oxygen, dies without the oxygen.

Now the northern Gulf already has a problem with hypoxic and anoxic waters because of the fertalizer pollution. The addition of this huge amount of oil will definately have a very large affect.

BP Oil Spill: Has Environmental Damage Been Exaggerated? - TIME

- President Obama has called the BP oil spill "the worst environmental disaster America has ever faced"

- Spill has killed less than 1% of the birds killed by the Exxon Valdez

- wildlife response teams have collected only three visibly oiled carcasses of any mammals.

- the spill prompted harsh restrictions on fishing and shrimping, but so far, the region's fish and shrimp have tested clean, and the restrictions are gradually being lifted.

- shorelines assessment teams have only found about 350 acres of oiled marshes

- Marine scientist Ivor Van Heerden states "I think they lied about the size of the spill — but we're not seeing catastrophic impacts"

- they have found only one other dead reptile (turtle) in the entire Gulf.

So..... someone exaggerated how big this spill was...

This is why someone with BP commented something about all the claims they would be requested to pay that would be bogus.

It appears that the 20 Billion dollar extortion from Obama could be included in that.

Guess what America?

The spill not being the ecological disaster many envisioned is GOOD FREAK"N NEWS

It is not a political issue. It affects millions of Americans who make their living off of the Gulf. But just because you can't see the oil doesn't mean it is not there. We may not know the true results for years

But it is good to hear that we may have gotten away with a major spill this time. It does not mean we do not have to be vigilant for the next time

So we have to shut down our farms as well as all our industries, Comrade! Your concern for humanity is touching

Photographs of oil-soaked birds from Gulf spill - Google Search

Talk to Time Magazine dumbass... they wrote the story.

See... libs are upset that it isnt' as bad as they thought and will fight as hard as they can to keep the impression alive that it is.

So my comment required a neg rep from you? What a fucking baby. Yours is coming up.

Not necessarily.... the story quoted says that much more oil than anticipated is just simply gone... evaporated or eaten by bacteria.

That still a guess because no one knows the effect that deep. Could be since the cap is containing it upward, it's blown a hole somewhere else and found another escape route--maybe all the way to the Arabian Sea and now OPEC will capture it and sell it back to us!

As a proud liberal you can hope huh? Sucks when your distasters that happen that makes you think you might get to stick it to us conservatives fails to be what you hoped huh?

:cuckoo: I'm guessing some mornings it must be difficult for you to gnaw through the leather straps.

Since you think you're so "right" about everything, why such anger? You and your ilk should be smiling all the time!! But I know, I know, times were much happier for you when your government was subsidizing oil companies at the same time they were reaping record profits and charging $4.00 for a gallon of gasoline. Ah yes, the good 'ol days... Were you even around then? Or still in diapers?
