PARIS (AP) -- Embattled French President Francois Hollande suffered a fresh setback Saturday when France's highest court threw out a plan to tax the ultrawealthy at a 75 percent rate, saying it was unfair.
In a stinging rebuke to one of Socialist Hollande's flagship campaign promises, the constitutional council ruled Saturday that the way the highly contentious tax was designed was unconstitutional. It was intended to hit incomes over €1 million ($1.32 million).

what was the tax rate on the top during some of our most prosperous years?

So because 75% is unfair that means 39% is unfair

And then-----and then the part of the article Gezz snipped went on to say: "Prime Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault was quick to respond, saying in a statement following the decision the government would resubmit the measure to take the court's concerns into account. The court's ruling took issue not with the size of the tax, but with the way it discriminated between households depending on how incomes were distributed among its members. A household with two earners each making under (EURO)1 million would be exempt from the tax, while one with one earner making (EURO)1.2 million would have to pay." IOW's the rate is not the issue.

Gezz - I recently spent a couple of days in SA. The husband/dad of the family I stayed with is pretty sure he's clinked glasses with you at the OC.

You should have given me a shout...some racquetball and a few glasses of Speyburn would have been good for you. I haven't been in a OC for years...

Hollande's tax hike was aimed at families and individuals that make €1 million or more. Now the french court says that only individuals, not families, should pay. So if you make €900K and your wife €600K you won't pay the 75% tax rate.

By the way, by taxing the millionaire, the french government only expected €100 million to €300 million a year.

In America, most mainstream media keeps saying that families making $250K or more are "rich" or "millionaire".

In California it would be close to 50%. Remember Prop. 30?

11% ???

Shocking

Many states will vote for tax hikes on the "rich". Because people think "it's not me"

The federal tax rates should be low in order to allow competition between states. That's the Swiss model. Even the German model, to some extent (the federal corporate tax rate is 15% since 2008)

This is pretty amazing and unique:

Swiss Voters Reject Proposal to Impose Higher Tax for Top Salary Earners - Bloomberg

In a referendum today, 59 percent of voters turned down the proposal by the Social Democrats to enact minimum taxes on income and wealth. Residents would have paid taxes of at least 22 percent on annual income above 250,000 francs ($249,000), according to the proposed changes.

Switzerland’s executive and parliamentary branches had rejected the proposal, saying it would interfere with the cantons’ tax-autonomy regulations.
