Exactly. The Republicans should step back and watch the Democrats go. The quicker we reach bottom the better it will be.

But what if we get there and most people decide they like European style socialism?

I mean, shit, Cameron and Merkel know that there are things they just can't touch in their countries, even if they call themselves conservatives.

This is why the 'Conservatives' are so incensed over ObamaCare. They realize that once people find that they can have health insurance throught this plan, they will be much more accepting of the idea of a universal single payer plan. And the US will join other nations and have a 21st century healthcare system instead of the present 19th century system.

European style socialism reflects the reality of population density. In order for society to work in a high density situation, there has to be a lot of socialist tools. For it to prosper, there also have to be capitalistic tools. The ideologues trying to create a 'pure' society out of one or the other of these tools are fools.

European "socialism" is not about "tax the rich"

Every european country has a national VAT, collected at each stage of the economy; and 83% of revenue come from taxes on labour and consumption (Eurostat average). Yes, we are less progressive than you.

Countries with low VAT rates or no VAT, like Switzerland or Japan, have their government revenue below 30% of GDP.

Germany socialists know that there are things they can't touch either. For example, they would not endorse the idea of inflating their way out of debt and recession. They will not tell the central bank to become a 24/7 printing press in order to let the government spend like a drunken sailor. It's in the interest of Germany, not partisan interest, not to do it.

Interesting. First of all, I care because I want two strong parties, so that each can keep the other in check. If you want to think that anyone who challenges you to think a bit is a liberal, that's your problem, not mine.
