What pre-civil war American cities had the most slaves

It make sense that New York would be one of top slave cities.

Originally, it was called New Amsterdam.

The Dutch Jews organized and ran the slave trade in the North and South Americas from there.

It makes sense because NYC was the center for trade on the East Coast and slaves were an important commodity. Slaves weren't just used in the southern cotton flelds, Yankees used them in all kinds of ways up to the begining of the industrial revolution. If you want to make a religious issue out of it you could investigate the muslem slave trade that existed then and still exists.

Not trying to make it a religious issue at all.

You mentioned that New York City was number two in the amount of slaves.

I was just pointing out that it was the epicenter of the American slave trade and ran by the Dutch Jews who lived there.

I can't imagine a rational "American" trying to make a point that the Jews were responsible for slavery. Go for it Sunny but Yankee slave traders didn't capture the Africans. African muslems had them waiting on the docks.

Then you need to read your history.

Dutch Jews organized and ran the slave trade in the Americas for the first 100 years.

Specifically out of New Amsterdam.

Which later became known as New York City

You would probably find more Catholics than Jews in British New York City. Should we balme Papists for Slavery? Maybe we should consider Quakers or Presbiterians. Go somewhere else for anti-semitic rants.

You are seriously going to claim that Jews didn't profit from slavery ? :eusa_eh:

"Profit from"? Most God fearing Christians in the South were Presbyterians and most politicians who represented the north and the south were Christians. Not many Jews were in government service. You can blame the Jews for slavery if it fits your skewed skinhead version of history. Why not?

You're a prime example of ignoring the truth and thinking that it somehow protects anyone. What does government service have to do with anything ?

Muslim women are still slaves today:

Did you ask your teacher if he had a link when he gave you homework? Here's the deal, I make the provocative statements and you do the research to refute them or go home.

Typically when someone is going to make a claim the onus is on them to prove that claim. It's not on the rest of us to prove a negative.

Typically? What are you ten years old? Typically we post thousands of facts on the internet without claiming a link. Do the work fools.

You're the one showing up as the fool. Without a link your statements hold no credibility. Actually, having seen some of your posts, the words 'no credibility' sound about right.

You win sunni. New York City had the most slaves. So what's the point? History is bigger than you think. The left wing often views history through nearsighted hate filled glasses. Slavery wasn't an issue that came and went during the four years of civil unrest in the early 1860's. The flag that flew off the stern of slave trade ships was the American flag or the Union Jack not the Confederate battle flag. New Jersey banned slavery only a decade before the Civil War. During the Civil War Draft Riots in New York, Black people, men and women, were lynched to lamp posts throughout the city. There is enough historic guilt to go around without focusing hatred on the South and southern democrats.

Interesting....you have a link on that or should we just take your word?

Doesn't work that way. You made a claim, provide evidence. It is not our job to prove you wrong, it is your job to prove your right.

Slavery was abolished in New York State in 1827. Prior to that it was the slave trades biggest hub. However by 1860 slavery had been outlawed in New York State for 33 years.

It could hardly have had the 2nd largest number of slaves of any city after 1827. And we are talking Civil War which begins in 1860. Using your logic we can clearly state that African Muslims were the largest slave holding group since just about every slave shipped to the US when it was legal were sold by African Muslims.

The only slaves in the North were slaves of Southern Gentry brought with the household for vacationing. And by 1860 just about every Northern State had outlawed that practice as well.

Rabbi Raphael is both a rabbi and a top historian of Jewish history. For the last generation he has been the editor of the quarterly journal, American Jewish History.

Rabbi Marc Lee Raphael on
Jews in the Slave Trade

"This was no less true on the North American mainland, where during the eighteenth century Jews participated in the 'triangular trade' that brought slaves from Africa to the West Indies and there exchanged them for molasses, which in turn was taken to New England and converted into rum for sale in Africa. Isaac Da Costa of Charleston in the 1750's, David Franks of Philadelphia in the 1760's, and Aaron Lopez of Newport in the late 1760's and early 1770's dominated Jewish slave trading on the American continent."

"Jews also took an active part in the Dutch colonial slave trade; indeed, the bylaws of the Recife and Mauricia congregations (1648) included an imposta (Jewish tax) of five soldos for each Negro slave a Brazilian Jew purchased from the West Indies Company. Slave auctions were postponed if they fell on a Jewish holiday. In Curacao in the seventeenth century, as well as in the British colonies of Barbados and Jamaica in the eighteenth century, Jewish merchants played a major role in the slave trade. In fact, in all the American colonies, whether French (Martinique), British, or Dutch, Jewish merchants frequently dominated.

I'll make it easy, Charleston S.C. holds the record for the most Africans held in bondage in slavery in a single US city. The city that gets second place has a nickname of a fruit and it ain't the peach.

In what year, amigo?

Slavery was outlawed in New York in 1827.

South Carolina having the highest percentage of slaves to freemen really doesn't surprise me.

The Carolinas were mostly originally settled by Barbado's SLAVERS.

You're just making shit up, aren't you?

It's obvious to anybody who know more than a few random facts from history.

Go read a book, Lad.

Educate yourself

I love the op ed. It is about as much relevance as "What pre civil war Roman citizen became the first emperor of the Roman Empire."

Timing is everything Whitey...and yours is out by a mile..
