What is wrong with what Akin said???

I am still waiting for someone to explain how this whole "the stress of rape prevents contraception" thing.

Then I will await how someone could prove such a thing.

That would be a fun study to get past the IRB.

his statements show his ignorance of the female body which does not know friendly sperm from foe...

o and let me add.....you are fucking idiot for not getting that

Perhaps, but serotonin levels from stress have an impact. Real rape is a violent and stressful event. I don't know if he's right or wrong, but I suspect that he is more right than wrong.

And we do need to address "real rape" versus "when I woke up, he was ugly," that is so often called "rape."

Serotonin?

of course, after all, who isn't "happy" after a rape session.

Here is exactly what Akin said that EVERYONE is SO.... upset with!!!

It seems to me, first of all, from what I understand from doctors, that's really rare. If it's a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down. But let's assume that maybe that didn't work or something. You know, I think there should be some punishment, but the punishment ought to be on the rapist and not attacking the child.

GOP Rep. Todd Akin Criticized For Rape Comment : NPR

Again taken totally OUT of CONTEXT ...LIKE "UNCHAINED"!!!!

Akin says that if it wasn't consensual sex, but actual physical totally against the woman's will (LEGITIMATE), sometimes NATURE will NOT allow conception to occur.

So Akin asks a logical question, JUST because the woman is inconvenienced by a pregnancy why should a human being DIE??:??

Seems like a legitimate statement:
Are you in favor of killing a human being JUST because someone is INCONVENIENCED?

Studies have found approximately 5 percent of rapes result in pregnancy.

All Things Considered host Melissa Block talks with Nick Baumann of Mother Jones magazine about the belief at the core of Missouri state Rep. Todd Akin's furor-raising statement over the weekend: that "legitimate rape" rarely leads to pregnancy.

The belief that hormones or adrenaline protect women from conception during rape has been perpetuated for decades in American political discourse, without scientific basis.

BAUMANN: So, as far as we can tell from CDC and medical studies and Planned Parenthood's released some numbers of their own, there are tens of thousands of pregnancies from rape in the U.S. each year. And about 5 percent of women who are raped get pregnant. About half of those pregnancies end in abortion..

Examining The Truth About Rape And Pregnancy : NPR

Most Americans are very sensitive to the issue of pregnancies related to rape.

I agree that rape pregnancies provide a convenient smokescreen for proponents of abortion. The victims of rape and incest are used as human shields to protect the annual million-plus abortions that are not from rape or incest. It is a disgusting tactic invariably used when a politician states they are pro-life. Every. Single. Time...they are asked, "What about in cases of rape or incest?"

And, bang, the smokescreen goes up. Rape and incest victims used as human shields. Sickening.

Most Americans support abortions in the case of rape or incest, even most pro-life people do.

For those who believe life begins at conception, one can be perceived as hypocritical if one supports the murder of a fertlized egg just because the fertilization came about as a result of rape.

Since Akins does believe life begins at conception, he has to take a non-hypocritical stand. He cannot support post-conception abortion under any circumstances.

This puts him at odds with even many pro-life people. Most Americans do not have a moral objection to aborting an unfeeling batch of cells. There are people who support abortion in the first trimester who self-identify as "pro-life".

Akins went further off the deep end with his highly unscientific claim that a woman's reproductive system shuts down when she is raped.

He's an idiot, but what is lost in the hyperbole is that he does not rise above the idiocy level of your average Congressman.

.

Yes Akins went off the deep end by not substantiating his claim with actual scientific evidence... his claim makes sense, but it needed to be left out of the discussion in my opinion.

I dont think that one comment makes one an idiot... if that were the case ALL members of Congress are inadequate to serve.

The hypocrisy of the left is what is pissing me off about the entire issue though.
Where are they when libs say stupid things? They seem to circle the wagons, while conservatives seem to circle the firing squad, and that is sad in some ways... and very unfair.

Personally I think Akin should step aside and do what is right... sad but true.

No one, when they are "actually" raped... :eusa_whistle:

I am laughing my ass off at the massacre of physiology by people who obviously suck at it.

Dude. It isn't the pro-choice people that are trying to make laws regulating women's bodies.

But they are trying to make laws regulating the murders of the unborn.

.

Yesterday, Vanessa at Feministing blogged on a study by the Center for Public Integrity about sexual assault on campus. The figure of campus rapes that go unreported is 95 percent—a sad and shocking state of affairs. And for those that are reported, disciplinary actions schools take against student perpetrators include measures such as:

New Report Shows 95% of Campus Rapes Go Unreported

-According to the Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network (RAINN), as of 2005, 60 percent of rape crimes go unreported, and it stands to reason that this number crosses generational lines—in other words, that regardless of age, most rape survivors do not report their crime. This number has fallen: in 1992, 84 percent of rapes went unreported.

yes infidel i understand facts and i understand when statistics are being manipulated to show what someone wants to show...do you?

So we shouldn't charge rape because, well...sometimes we get it wrong?

So, our choices are - assume all men guilty, or never charge?

LOL

You are a whackjob.

Courts get it wrong sometimes. Juries get it wrong. Should we do away with sentencing because juries make mistakes?

Rape is a serious crime that should be treated harshly - which is all the more reason not to treat it frivolously the way we do.

Oh, I see. So a girl wears a skirt, get drunks and passes out. It requires no violence to undress her so that's not rape?

What the girl wears is irrelevant. The more likely scenario is she get drunk and the boy whispers "you're beautiful, I love you" and she lets him.

Next morning, she has regrets - so of course he should go to prison. It's only right. Oh, and the scarlet letter forever.

OK then. Run with that claim. Shout it loud and proud.

What claim is that, racist? That rape and regret are two distinct issues?

Hey dummy.... how do you explain when someone loses their will to live and just dies? No sickness... just lost the will to live.
It happens all the time.

And NO... Im not getting you a link. Look it up yourself.

wow, you are a scholar.

What in the fuck are you talking about, Newton?

Except what you describe is not rape,

But a lot of men go to jail, and wear the scarlet letter for it.

and courts realize this. That's why we have courts.

Good fucking joke - bummer there is zero truth to it. BTW, a black man is more likely to be falsely accused of rape.

Brian Banks, CA Football Player, Exonerated Of Rape Charges After Over 5 Years In Prison (PHOTOS)

As a racist, this should matter to you.

Or would you prefer we just dismiss any potential cases where that might be the case?

Rape is an act of violence, where force and coercion are used.

Getting drunk isn't rape. Perhaps there should be some laws on it, but rape it isn't.

Again many people including Romney, McConnell all have really jumped to conclusions over this! They really didn't think what Akin's was explaining through and like most of us (INCLUDING ME INITIALLY) jumped wrongly!
It wasn't till I read closely what Akin was saying there were several contexts here.
A) Defining "legitimate rape" caused ME as most people to JUMP to conclusion But
then I remembered that college legends of guys like you shared having their lives
ruined because after all the woman would NEVER lie!
B) The other aspect about shutting down.. again MOST lay people like me don't understand
that under the stress of A TrUE RAPE violence.. Ovulation will be greatly impeded hormonally hence conception might be shut down!

Serotonin?

I'm backing into this in a weird way.

My wife and I have some friends that were trying to have a baby (not a fetus or a blob of tissue, oddly enough.) They had a very difficult time and went to see a fertility specialist. Along with the usual charting stuff, they had to get her very relaxed. Meditate, no stress at all. Massage to release Serotonin was supposed to help conception.

So - if stress levels affect it when trying to conceive, then the stress of being violently violated would have to have an effect as well.

Again, what Akin said was stupid, but I'll bet there was a tiny nugget of fact somewhere behind it.

So you are just basically making up physiologic fact.

How does serotonin affect conception?
