Why does a person want to live in a socialist system? Why do they want more government control of their lives? Is it because they want handout's from the government? Do they wish to surrender their individual rights for a few scraps from the governments table of taxes? Open your eyes people just look at the new Healthcare Law, there are a lot of mandates in it, requirements to buy something that you may not need or want. Could it be that people are afraid of failure is that why they crave socialism?

Will the hand-wringing never end? The US was the only first world nation without socialized medicine. I dunno if what we got in the health care bill qualifies as that, but it's a step. If there are weird things in the bill -- as seems to be the case -- hopefully in time, they can be removed.

The answer is yes, I want to live in a nation where none of my neighbors are denied health care. I'm just as socialist as the average Canadian.

You people need a new tune to play; this one is o-l-d.

Simply because as long as we have a government we will have a degree of socialism. Our government provides police and fire protection, schools, roads, military....all socialist programs
The question is not whether we should be socialist or not, but to what degree
Some functions are better performed by the government than the private sector. Healthcare is one of them. The US has the most expensive healthcare system in the world. We pay more and get less. One of the reasons is we have ducked our responsibility to care for our people and passed it off to employers to provide as a "benny" to their employees.
This benny used to be low cost and was widely available. With increasing healthcare costs, employers are dumping healtcare coverage in increasing numbers.
It is another example of a program that is best provided by the government...the rest of the world has already figured this out

I am very aware of what I am saying. I am not the one with the blinders on. I am not the one that goes into the defensive mode when the word soicalism is mentioned.

How do you pay for your health insurance, if you have it?

Police are not obligated to protect anyone.
Have you ever heard of a voluntary fire department?
Privates schools?
If you think we pay more for healthcare and get less now just wait until you get the bill for the healthcare law, just wait until it comes into effect. you ain't seen nothing yet.
And why are employers dumping healtcare coverage in increasing numbers now?

BRAVO Madeline, BRAVO ! You do have some reasonable ideas for at least 21 consecutive days.

Because I pay $7 a month for 2 MB internet, $30 a month for electric,800 kWH, $24 a month for auto insurance,$19 a month for health care including free prescriptions, dental, and eyes.
$7 for telephone. 13 cents for long distance.$6 for a liter of liquor, $1.30 for a pack of smokes.
$45 for 4 vials of antivenin.$10 to 15 for a college level research book.$20 a month for Mandarin classes.
$240 a year for property tax. $400 a year for one million coverage for homeowners insurance.
The central bank pays me 6% interest.
Damn socialistas.
We need to import about 100,000 Jews to get in the middle of all these contracts and raise the cost of living about 500%.......or more.
Gawd Blass Kaptalizm !

One of the things I see 'wrong with people' is the blithely tossing around of labels like "socialist" and "socialism" in order to demonize opinions and positions.

My personal frustration in American politics stems from the apparent majority who can't seem to see beyond the talking points from both sides of the aisle. Instead of just following the talking heads and the politicians, how difficult is it for people to use guys like Rush and the politicians as the tools that they are to follow the money to actual answers? Apparently, the first requirement is to be smarter than a 5th grader.

Would you want the government to say no more abortions?

Socialism you call Medicare socialism? Then I'm a socialist becuase I support Medicare.

In 2002 I suffered a heart attack on the eve of December 23rd. I was rushed to the hospitial by ambulance, diagnosed and put into Intensive Care where I stayed for 6 days, I was moved to a post Cradiac Ward for 3 days and was transferred by Ambulance to the Trillium Health Care Centre in Mississauga where I had a stent put into an artery. The total cost for this entire event was slightly over 200.00 for a TV and Phone Rental in my semi-private rooms. I continue to take 3 prescription meds a day and see a Cardiologist twice per year. The cost is ZERO, NOTHING, NOT A DIME.

Do I believe in Socialized Medicine as Americans like to call it ? Damn right I do.
