I love that absolute truth that can't be ignored by a rational adult...

The inescapable truth that socialism is oppressive, and has not only been the form of government embraced by the most murderous despots in human history, but that the only resulting "equality" that has ever resulted from it has been widespread poverty, illiteracy, disease, corruption and a desire to escape people's homelands.

A major reason why intelligent people tend to be liberal (related a bit to the first reason), is that conservatism is the default position. As Charlton once wrote on this blog “conservatism is natural and spontaneous”. I agree with this; conservatism is natural because conservatism is all about our most primitive self-serving impulses: tribalism, family and children, greed etc. Evolution has predisposed us to feel emotions that enhance our genetic fitness, and these are the conservative emotions, so conservatives are disgusted by immigration because it threatens their gene pool. They worship wealth because historically, the ability to acquire resources enhanced the survival of one’s self, one’s family, and one’s tribe. They are disgusted by feminism because feminist daughters threaten their genetic fitness by being too focused on career to give them grand-kids. Similarly, they are disgusted by gays because openly gay sons also don’t give them any grand-kids. So evolution has programmed us to feel conservative emotions, and thus only people who are intelligent enough to think critically about their evolutionary programming and rebel against it, tend to have the option of being liberal.

I don't see much correlation between intelligence and your Political views. There are smart Democrats, smart Republicans, smart Independents and plenty of dumb ones as well. Its so painful to watch conservative attempt to be 'smart'. Conservatism is the modern attempt to make selfishness noble. I forget who the quote comes from but it strikes at the heart of it.

Boats coming from Cuba? Yeah I don't see many boats coming from Sweden, or Switzerland, France, England, Australia. Conservatives always gravitate to any SINGLE example and then conflate the example as "see, this one example proves all of what I say is absolute truth". But it doesn't.

Later they are talking about religion, conservatives in fact lump all Muslims together as terrorists and the religion as evil. No critical thinking at all. They get to this point by pure gut-level fear reaction.

There are estimated to have been 40,000 religions, big and small, in human history. Probably 4,000 big and small on Earth right now. People from EACH of those religions claims theirs is THE TRUTH, and all the other 3,999 are falsehoods.

Where is the 'real' truth? Belief does not create reality. It is merely an interpretation of reality. Don't believe in gravity? Step off a cliff and you will find your belief is not reality.

A cop comes to your door and is sorry to tell you your 17 year old son died in a car crash an hour ago. All people that love their children will be devastated by this news, fall to the ground and wail, knowing their world just changed forever. But the cop is wrong, a call comes in and they have the wrong name and the parents are beyond elated that their child is alive.

But the emotion of losing the child was exactly the same as when one would really lose a child. Because the person BELIEVED it. That is how powerful belief is. The human brain has a hard time getting a firm grasp on reality.
