The Senate and House Dems, along with the left "mainstream media" for the past several years are going all out, working extremely hard every single day to try and convince everyday Democrats that they are fringe thinkers. The far-left has absolute control of Washington Democrats and the media.
Trumps win should have been a loud and clear message to both parties, but especially Democrats, that everyday Democrats are not far leftist.
The vast majority of Democrats all over the country care 1000 times more about their own plight than DACA. Sure they support DACA...but not enough to shutdown the f*cking government to force it through. Not enough that it paralyzes Washington.

The only strategy he had or has is letting dem senators vote their own conscience and contitutents' interests. He had a pretty shitty hand to begin with, but Trump needs NINE democrat votes. And Trump could not identify precisely what he would trade for those votes. Schumer did try negotiating at least twice with Trump, and you should not assume Schumer's desire was a shutdown. It wasn't. He's a legislator with a history of "doing deals."

Conversely, Trump has no experience in working with coalitions that he represents. Everytime he tried to make a deal, the conservatives pulled him back, and he had to reneg on an offer he'd made or accepted.

Since Trump is trying to drain the swamp learning through shutdowns who is or is not needed will permit a more surgical shrinkage of the bureaucracy, not to mention the house getting the deep state memo tied up in pretty a bow means that there is an oversupply of ammo to paint the Ds as the party of traitors in the run up to the mid-terms. As long as he keeps the prison sentences within reason he's cool.
