What Is Obama's Religion?

Is Obama a Muslim, or is he a member of the United Church of Christ? I would really find it intersting if he is a member of UCC, but the media has created the idea that he is a Muslim by faith.

Anyone good data to prove either side?

What does it matter? Any religion is as good as another, even Islam.

"Why is it OK for blacks with Harvard Law degress to have "self empowerment" but any white who breathes in that direction gets their fucking head shot off by a federal sniper in the trees?"

Not sure I follow this one. For the same reason is used to be okay to lynch a black for looking at a white women or acting too uppity?

Funny, thing, but the day after I posted this, my son forwarded one of the frigging chain letter emails. It made all the claims about Obama's Mama and Daddy, madrassas, extremes, etc. etc. etc. and gave a link to the Snopes site that discussed and refuted these claims.

Unfortunately, it only went to the Snopes general site that had advertizing. I will bet most of the folks who got it, never even checked out the site.

I resent the whole thing to all those on the list with the correct URL. They still probably didn't read it.

It all depends on how your mommy or daddy biassed your opinion and whether you ever grew up to see the world on your own.

Who gives a shit what his religion he is as long as he doens't try and legislate with it...

For the same reason voters give a shit about every aspect of a potential President's life.

Again, why is the media virtually ignoring Obama and his religion yet dissecting in detail the other candidates with regard to their religions?

If the media dissect the religious views of other candidates, I think that it is because those candidates bring it up themselves. How often does the Obama mention his religion? How often does Huckabee mention his religion? How often does Romney mention his religion?

The media are idiots. The only thing that should interest them are his policies, or whether he has personal beliefs, or has committed actions that will impact on his term if he makes president. What god he tolerates his nobody's business but his own, and if you want to make it your business, go ahead but it won't affect his presidentcy one iota if he keeps it to himself..

Seems they are beginning to:

...Why is it, I wonder, that nobody is asking Barack Obama about his religious convictions? From what I’ve gathered, they’re far more fascinating than Mitt Romney’s.

For over 20 years, Sen, Obama has been a faithful member of Chicago’s Trinity United Church of Christ. The other day, I paid a visit to Trinity’s website. There I read that the vision statement of the TUCC is based upon something called the systematized liberation theology that began in 1969 with the publication of Dr. James Cone’s book, “Black Power and Black Theology.” Dr. Cone believes that black Christians should not follow the “White Church,” as it had failed to support them in their struggle for equal rights in America. I suspect that most white Christians would disagree.

Trinity United boasts that it is a congregation “Unashamedly Black and Unapologetically Christian.” What’s more, “it is a congregation with a non-negotiable commitment to Africa. We are an African people, and remain true to our native land, the mother continent, the cradle of civilization.”

Its pastor, Reverend Jeremiah A. Wright, Jr., has referred to “white arrogance” and “the United States of Whiter America.” To my ears, that sounds unashamedly black, but I’m not so sure about the unapologetically Christian.

Furthermore, Rev. Wright’s church publishes a magazine, The Trumpet. Not too surprisingly, all things considered, the recipient of the 2007 Lifetime Achievement Trumpeter Award for Social Justice was none other than Louis Farrakhan, the fellow who plays the race card even better than he plays his violin.
....

That being said, I have no idea how a member of a black church that apparently feels it owes greater allegiance to Africa than to America and that pays homage to a bigot like Farrakhan, has the gall to present himself as the one candidate who can bring us all together.

there is no more traditional mainline protestant denomination than the United Church of Christ. Congregationalists are the oldest denomination in New England. Obama is a member of the UCC.... the fact that different churches reside in different neighborhoods and have different socio-economic memberships which shape their mission is really not that big a deal... but, of course, the right wants desperately to make it one.

Look. If you are so concerned about the candidates’ religion or religious background, then state here: http://projects.washingtonpost.com/2008-presidential-candidates/ and look him up. If you are not satisfied by the amount of information presented try this site: http://www.vote-smart.org/election_president.php. If you still don’t have enough info, look at http://www.electoral-vote.com/evp2007/Pres/pres_races.html. Here is a good web site that lets you see the candidates’ position with respect to religion and “religious issues”: http://pewforum.org/religion08/. Here is another site: http://politics.nytimes.com/election-guide/2008/candidates/index.html

The bottom line is to say “Do your own freaking homework and look it up for yourself. There is plenty of information on your particular candidate – whoever that candidate may be.

"traditional"? "mainstream"? LOL maybe in the past, and maybe some, but not all

United Church of Christ is not exactly "united" and therefore individual congregations may not be so "mainstream" as you might think. In fact there are some UCC churches that cater specifically to minority groups like gays just as some cater to blacks.

Indeed, the relationship between local congregations and the denomination's national headquarters is covenantal rather than hierarchical: local churches have complete control of their finances, hiring and firing of clergy and other staff, and theological and political stands.

When you look at the beliefs set forth in the Trinity United Church of Christ that Barack Obama belongs to certain questions come up that I would like to see answered such as:

Does Obama also pledge his allegiance to Africa?

Is Obama also against the pursuit of "middleclassness"?

Does Obama also believe in the Black Value System?

These are all things that appear to be in opposition to the office of the President of the United States. Why isn't the media questioning these questionable things? Oh that's right….he's a Democrat…and the left's new media darling.

yikes! the Washington Post has "profiles"! Isn't that "profiling"?

thanks for the links but they do not address my concerns...see above.

The Media stresses his Christianity. Point to one source of mainstream media that suggests he is other than Christian.

Of course, the media ignores the racist undertones of the Trinity Church of Christ of which he is a member....

The Reverend John H. Thomas, general minister and president of the United Church of Christ:

"Trinity UCC is rooted in and proud of its Afrocentric heritage," Thomas said. "This is no different than the hundreds of UCC churches from the German Evangelical and Reformed stream that continue to own and celebrate their German heritage, insisting on annual sausage and sauerkraut dinners and singing Stille Nacht on Christmas Eve. Recognizing and celebrating our distinctive racial-ethnic heritages, cultures, languages and customs are what make us unique as a united and uniting denomination."

Undernews Alert: ObamaMaking an issue of his Afrocentric church?
By Mickey Kaus
Updated Monday, Jan. 14, 2008, at 4:40 AM ET

Undernews Alert: It's hard to believe that Obama's Afrocentric church--with its troubling attack on "the pursuit of middeclassness"--isn't going to be an issue in the campaign, soon. There are already wild, inflammatory emails circulating, I hear. ..

I couldnt give the first rats rectum who Obama prays too. However, it doesn't surprise me that it's mud slung from the right. Indeed, they are the ones cannibalizing romney over his incompatible dogma so why not pounce on a democrat. Hell, clearly the Constitution requires that only southern baptist are allowed office in this nation.

:clap2:

It's hilarious that this is the dog eat dog product of the 04 prothltized election where the jebus vote couldn't see 4 years ahead to the denominations back stabbing, yet, It's sad that a person's faith has become such a litmus test in American politics. Yes, we should really be preaching at third world nations about our better system.

I am not the Catholic candidate for President. I am the Democratic Party's candidate for President, who happens also to be a Catholic.
John F. Kennedy
